How To: Redirect Links on Android to Open in the App You Really Wanted

How To: Redirect Links on Android to Open in the App You Really Wanted
One of Android's biggest strengths relative to iOS is the fact that you can use any app to open compatible links, not just the stock ones that come preloaded on your device. When you tap a link that two or more of your apps are capable of opening, you'll see a message asking which app to launch it with—and from there, the choices are "Just Once" or "Always."If you choose "Just Once," you'll continue to be prompted to select an app every time you tap one of these types of links, which gets annoying fast. Choosing "Always" means that you'll never be prompted again, and instead, your phone will just open those links with the app you chose from now on.Don't Miss:Add a Countdown to Android's Link-Handling System with 'Better Open With'In the past, I've covered an app called Better Open With that improves this interface, by replacing the "Just Once" and "Always" options with a countdown that defaults to your preferred app if you don't choose a different one first. This resolves most of the issues here, but it's not a perfect solution for everybody, and some might not like the fact that it replaces Android's default link-handling system. This is where a new app from developer Said Dane comes into play. It resides in Android's share menu, so it leaves your existing link-handling settings alone. Then, you simply select it when links created by URL shorteners open in your default browser instead of your preferred app, or in any situation where you'd just like to open a link in a different app. You can use it all by itself, or pair it with Better Open With to make problems with Android's link-handling system a thing of the past.

Step 1: Install Open Link WithTo put an end to all your frustrations with Android's link-handling system, start by installing an app called Open Link With.Install Open Link With for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Grant Usage AccessLaunch the app, then flip through the set-up guide to get a better idea of how it all works. When you arrive on the final screen of this set-up guide, you should take the time to tap the "Give Access" button. From here, select "Open Link With," then enable Usage Access on the following screen. This will let the app adapt to your preferences to show your most common link handlers first in the list.

Step 3: Force Links to Open with a Different AppWith that done, you can basically forget that you have Open Link With installed—at least, until you need it. From this point on, whenever a link opens in the wrong app for any reason, just head to the Android share menu, then select "Open With" from the list. Next, you'll be prompted to choose a different app to open this link, and just like with Android's share menu, the options are "Just Once" and "Always." However, these settings only pertain to links shared via Open Link With, so choosing "Always" here won't affect your existing, system-wide link-handling settings.Aside from that, the link will open in your preferred app immediately after selecting it from the share menu. So any time you get stuck in the wrong app, or simply want to open a link with a different app one time, you'll be able to do so using Open Link With. How To: Get Floating Chat Head Notifications for All Apps on Your Samsung Galaxy Note 2

The HTC First (aka "Facebook phone") has been a bigger disappointment than Dwyane Wade in this year's NBA playoffs. AT&T even dropped the price to $0.99 (with a contract) a mere month after its release. When they realized that the price drop wasn't enough to increase sales, they decided to just discontinue the damn thing altogether. Although the phone itself isn't doing so well, one feature from the Facebook-centric device that people actually seem to like is Chat Heads. On the HTC First, Chat Heads can pop up anywhere on the phone so you can stay connected to your friends no matter what you're doing. Facebook's native application later received the same treatment, but the Chat Heads were constrained to use only within the app, not throughout the whole OS. Inspired by this, Paranoid Android created a Chat Heads feature for their custom ROM called Halo—but it requires you to root and flash the ROM. Now, for those running a stock ROM, your Chat Heads are finally here.

How to Install Chat Head-Like Floating NotificationsAndroid developer Rob Joseph has created a Chat Heads-like app in Floating Notifications. While the app is currently in alpha, it works great on my Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Before installing, first make sure you have "Unknown Sources" checked, which can be found in Settings -> Security. To install it, simply head over to the XDA thread and download the newest version of his APK files (located at the bottom of the page). Right now, the newest one is 4r1, which you can download directly right here. Once you download the application, you'll be prompted to head over to your Accessibility settings and turn on Floating Notifications. Once it's enabled, you'll see a stack of Chat Heads show up, which you can then move anywhere on the screen. In the settings, you can change things such as the theme, the size of the icon, the font size, and whether or not you want the Chat Heads to show up on your lockscreen. You can also select which applications you want to use for the notifications. Every time you receive a notification, the blue icon will buzz. Then, all you have to do is tap it to see them. Again, the application is currently in alpha, so it may be prone to crashing and a few other small issues. Try it out and let us know how it works for you. How To: Turn a Paperwhite into the New Absurdly-Priced Kindle Oasis

How To: Turn a Paperwhite into the New Absurdly-Priced Kindle Oasis

Amazon just unveiled the Kindle Oasis, the latest model in its popular line of e-readers. There are a couple of nice new features, but it's pretty hard to see how any of them justify the whopping $290 price tag (or $310 if you don't want ads littering your screen).Unlike previous models, Oasis is designed asymmetrically, with an ergonomic "hump" on one side that makes gripping the Kindle easier with one hand, and shifts the center of gravity into your palm. Oasis also has 10 LEDs in its screen to more evenly light the display, physical buttons for page turning, is only 3.4 millimeters wide (on the non-grip side), and weighs in at just 4.6 ounces (131 grams). The reader also comes with a battery-equipped leather case, which is where most of the "improved battery life" is actually stored. On its own, Oasis will last about two weeks with regular use, but that stretches to eight or nine weeks when used with a fully-charged case. The $290 price tag is even a little misleading, as you'll have to tack on an extra $20 if you'd like a charging brick (rather than just a USB cable) and $13 for a screen protector, bringing the total to $322 just for the reader. And this is for the version with "Special Offers," or ads, as they're more commonly known. You can pay another $20 to remove the ads, which... ugh... just ugh.Fortunately, there's an easy way to get most of the features of Oasis for a fraction of the price.

Step 1: Buy a Kindle PaperwhiteOther than the price tag and the ergonomic hump, there really isn't much difference between the Oasis and the Paperwhite. Both have 6-inch, 300 dpi, glare-resistant displays. Both can hold several thousand books. Yes, you'll have to turn the pages on a Paperwhite using the touchscreen instead of using the physical buttons, but you should be able to endure. The Paperwhite is a little bit larger than Oasis, but actually ends up weighing slightly less than Oasis does when it's in its charging case. The price is the biggie; Paperwhite will only run you $120 to start.

Step 2: Buy a Third-Party GripSince the Paperwhite doesn't come with an ergonomic grip, we're going to have to add one. Luckily, they come pretty cheap. You can get some LAZY-HANDS Reader Grips, i.e., movable finger grips, for $18. Adding the grips brings our Paperwhite tally up to $138.

Step 3: Buy a CaseThat is, if you want a case. Paperwhite isn't compatible with charging cases, but that's fine—it's not like charging a Kindle regularly is that hard.If you'd like a case for other reasons, you've got plenty of options. There's always Amazon's Limited Edition Premium Leather Cover, but that costs $60. Amazon also sells a more "standard" Leather Cover, but at $40, the price is still a little high. Really, you should be able to go with one of the much-cheaper third-party covers without any worry. A lot of these are only $10-$20, so we'll call it $15 for our purposes. That brings our total up to $153.

Step 4: Fill Your Paperwhite with BooksWell, that's it. Your Paperwhite is now an Oasis for all intents and purposes, but at 47% of the price. You can use that leftover $137 to start filling up your Kindle with books. That's 27 books at an average of $4.99 per book. Image by Yuya Tamai/Flickr The Oasis won't begin shipping until April 27th, but unless there's some super-secret feature that Amazon hasn't announced yet, your money will probably be better spent on the trusty Paperwhite and a couple cheap accessories.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

How To: Customize the Android App Icons on Your Nexus 7 Tablet with Free Themes

How To: Customize the Android App Icons on Your Nexus 7 Tablet with Free Themes
Android's stock appearance is easy on the eyes, but after a while, it's outright boring to look at.Unlike other tablets from some manufacturers, the Nexus 7 runs stock Android and is free from any special UI tweaks or customizations. Sure, you can download themes for a third-party launcher, but themes are launcher specific. They will not work for launchers they weren't designed for.Today, I'll show you how to get any theme working on your Nexus 7 tablet using a special app called Icon Themer by Android developer ruqqq. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Step 1: Make Sure You're RootedYou'll need to be rooted, so be sure to check out my guide on rooting the Nexus 7 if you're not already.

Step 2: Check Unknown SourcesBe sure you have Unknown Sources enabled in Settings -> Security -> Device Administration before you install anything.

Step 3: Get XposedYou need to install a framework for Icon Themer to latch onto to function, and for this, we'll be using the Xposed Framework by rovo89 to mod Android without any ROM flashing. Xposed Framework was designed to apply mods to Android without the mess and permanence of flashing.Download and install the Xposed Installer 2.14 (APK) using this link. Launch the Xposed Installer and tap the button for Install/Update. Wait until you see Done to be sure it's installed and updated. Reboot your tablet afterwards.

Step 4: Installing Icon ThemerDownload and install Icon Themer using this link. Make sure to click on the newest APK version.

Step 5: Activate Icon Themer in XposedBe sure to activate the Icon Themer module in the Modules tab in Xposed Installer to get it working.

Step 6: Downloading Icon SetsHead back over to Icon Themer and tap the second link for free icons. It'll launch the Play Store and do a search for available icons. Now just download the icons you want! Afterwards, head back to Icon Themer again to apply the icons. Choose from the icon sets you installed. Tap the button to apply the icon pack. Finally, just tap the button for soft reboot to use the new icons.

Done! Here's stock (top) and with an icon set applied (bottom). Icons can clearly make a drastic change to the look of the Android UI. No more blandness! The icon set I'm using is called DCikonZ by Daniel Czarnomorski and is available as a free download. Give this app a try and never get bored of how your Nexus 7 looks again!

News: Traveling Abroad? Here Are 6 Reasons Google Fi Is the Best Option

News: Traveling Abroad? Here Are 6 Reasons Google Fi Is the Best Option

After reviewing the international plans for major US wireless carriers, it became obvious they're all pretty bad. Your data is heavily restricted, requiring a daily fee which can cost an extra $100+ on a seven-day vacation. That's when I learned about Google Fi, and how for most travelers, it's the best option. Each of the four major carriers requires some version of a data pass for calling, texting, and a limited amount of 4G data. And for the two carriers that offer some international coverage without a data pass, it's limited to 2G.Then there is Google Fi. Google's MVNO manages to bring a consistent experience to its users, offering the same low call rates, unlimited texting, and affordable data without any additions to your plan. With Google Fi, you don't have to worry about extra charges after your international trip — it's even possible to go on your trip without paying a single additional dime.Don't Miss: Comparing International Data Plans from All Major US Carriers
1. Cheap Voice CallsWith Google Fi (formerly Project Fi), voice calling within supported countries is one rate: $0.20 per minute. This is cheaper than both T-Mobile and Sprint, who charge $0.25 per minute on most plans.Google Fi can even be better suited for some travelers than the plans offered by Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile which offer unlimited calling as part of a data pass for either $5 or $10 a day per line. As long as you're making less than 25–50 minutes worth of calls (to places within the area), it's cheaper to use Google Fi.And to save a bit of money, any calls back to the US can be done for free over Wi-Fi. You can also use Wi-Fi to avoid paying for any incoming calls, as this is also free. So to put it simply, you'll only be paying for calls you make to the local international region as long as you use Wi-Fi calling.
2. Free SMS TextingGoogle Fi also offers free SMS texting internationally. While this service is provided by some wireless carriers (namely, T-Mobile and Sprint), for Verizon and AT&T users, this once again requires the data pass and its daily fee. With Google Fi, without any addition to your plan, you can text as usual as long as you're in any of the 170+ supported countries. And that includes calls and texts to unsupported countries.
3. Cheap 4G DataWhen traveling internationally, data is essential. Whether it's checking Google Maps for directions, using messenger apps for free calls and texts, or Yelp for places of interest, having a lot of high-speed data is arguably more important than when you're at home. Unfortunately, most wireless carriers limit access to 4G LTE data, making travel more difficult using your domestic plan.Google Fi offers one of the simplest data plans for international travelers: you use your domestic plan allowance. With Bill Protection, this means $10 per GB for the first 6 GB of data, then unlimited high speed data afterward for no additional cost. While your data will be throttled to 2G speeds after 15 GB (per line), if you need more, you can opt to restore 4G service for $10 per GB (after 15 GB).This is perhaps the single best feature of Fi when it comes to traveling: Data usage doesn't cost a penny more than it does in the US, and you get the same high-speed connection you would get here. This data plan is significantly different than the other four wireless carriers. Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint all offer 4G data, but require a data pass which charges you a daily fee. Even worse, Verizon and T-Mobile limit this amount to 0.5 GB of 4G LTE a day. T-Mobile lets you stack passes for up to 1.5 GB, but that's still nothing when compared to Google Fi. Sprint and AT&T offer unlimited data (Sprint offers truly unlimited while AT&T offers you a data allowance), but this still requires a daily fee per line. And if you decide not to use the pass, the fastest speed offered for free is 2G (T-Mobile).
4. Pausable ServiceWhile Google Fi is great for traveling, you might prefer another wireless carriers for your domestic plan. Well, with Google Fi, you can pause your service up to three months, keeping it active only while you're traveling. While your service is paused, you will keep your number, won't be able to make any calls, send texts, or use data, and you won't be charged for any unused service. If you don't resume after three months, your service will automatically turn on, but you can then pause it again at any time. For someone who travels frequently, this flexibility lets you use Google Fi as a better international plan than your main wireless carrier and avoid the use of an international prepaid card and having to use an overseas phone number. Pausing also applies for military service men and women for up to 39 months.
5. Wi-Fi SecurityEven with the affordable data provided by Google Fi, you will still probably spend a decent amount of time using public Wi-Fi when on vacation. Google Fi has an option to automatically connect you to open Wi-Fi networks whenever one comes into range. However, open Wi-Fi networks can be dangerous, as they are a frequent target for hackers who can perform attacks such as man-in-the-middle where they can see all your web-based data as you browse.Google Fi protects against this threat by including a free VPN which encrypts your data. Encrypted data is similar to traveling down a highway in an armored truck vs. your car. If hackers try to intercept your truck, they will have a hard time accessing what's inside when compared to a standard vehicle. VPNs are a must-have when traveling abroad, and thanks to Google, you'll have a free one automatically.
6. Many Supported CountriesFinally, Google Fi supports a broad array of countries. Over 170 countries are supported by their international plan, all of which enjoy the benefits outlined above. More than likely, anywhere you visit will be supported, so you can enjoy the same Google Fi coverage as soon as you depart from the plane.
There Are Some NegativesWhile Google Fi is pretty amazing for traveling, it does come with a few disadvantages that you should be aware of. First is the the fact that you won't get several key features if your phone is not "Designed for Fi." Most Android phones aren't in this list, but even more conspicuously, Apple's iPhones are non-Fi phones. For iPhones, using Wi-Fi for calls and texts is only possible via the Google Fi app, forcing you to pay $0.20 per minute no matter who you call. And since this is a Google MVNO, there is no Designed for Fi iPhone, which means Apple users will always deal with this problem for the foreseeable future. Wi-Fi calling and texting are also sketchy for non-Fi Android phones. You can work around this by linking your number with Google Hangouts and using the app to make calls. Android users will need to download the Hangouts Dialer app as well to enable Wi-Fi calling. But once you've done that, you can make Wi-Fi calls through the Hangouts app, and the same rates discussed above will apply, including free calls to the US.Another thing is while cellular calls enjoy the same low rate of $0.20 per minute, Wi-Fi calling doesn't. Wi-Fi call rates vary between countries, with some countries offering rates at a few cents and some charging higher than the $0.20 per minute. This means you may have to balance between making calls on cellular then turning on Wi-Fi to receive calls, as the latter is free.Even with the negatives, Google Fi is your best option for traveling abroad. With its low fixed rates, affordable 4G data, and unlimited texting, travelers can comfortably use their regular phone without the need of a prepaid SIM card or a data pass. Google Fi eliminates the need to check for overages or having to remember to turn on international service in the first place. Just get off the plane, turn your phone on, and you are ready to go.This article was produced during Gadget Hacks' special coverage on traveling with your smartphone. How To: Get Custom Lock Screen Shortcuts on Android Lollipop

How To: Get Custom Lock Screen Shortcuts on Android Lollipop
Android's lock screen has evolved quite a bit over the years. From the Donut days of two tabs that launched the phone app and unlocked the device, to KitKat's clean and simple approach, shortcuts have come and gone.Lollipop marked the return of a pair of lock screen shortcuts—one for the Phone app, and the other for the Camera. These two apps are always a quick horizontal swipe away, which works quite well for a lot of people. But not everyone needs a quick-draw Camera or Phone app—some folks might prefer a different set of apps that can be accessed this easily. So developer TheFrenchTouch created an Xposed module that will allow you to launch any app with your lock screen shortcuts. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
RequirementsRooted device running stock Android 5.0+ (AOSP) Xposed Framework installed "Unknown Sources" enabled

Step 1: Install 'Custom Stock Lollipop LockscreenTo begin, head to the Download section of your Xposed Installer app and search for Custom Stock Lollipop Lockscreen, then tap the top result. From here, swipe over to the Versions tab, then hit the "Download" button next to the most recent entry. Within a few seconds, Android's installer interface should come right up. Simply tap "Install" on this screen.

Step 2: Activate the Module & RebootWhen installation has finished, you'll get a notification from Xposed telling you that the module hasn't been activated yet and that a reboot is needed. So tap this notification, then on the following screen, tick the box next to the newly-installed module. From here, use the drop-down menu at the top of the screen to head to the Framework section. After that, tap the "Soft Reboot" button, then press "OK" on the popup.

Step 3: Set Your Custom ShortcutsWhen you get back up, open the "Custom Stock Lollipop Lockscreen" app that you'll find in your app drawer. There are only two options in here—"Left Shortcut" and "Right Shortcut." These refer to the swipe-in gestures that you can perform from either side of your lock screen, which open the Phone and Camera apps respectively. To make one of these gestures launch a custom app, tap the associated entry. From here, simply choose your favorite app from the list. You can repeat this process for the other gesture if you'd like, but it should be noted that replacing either gesture will cause the corresponding icon in the corner of your lock screen to turn into a small circle.Nonetheless, you can now launch your custom app directly from the lock screen. Just swipe in from the edge, and your app will open immediately. (1) Left shortcut set to launch Chrome. (2) Chrome opened directly from lock screen. Which app or apps did you set as your custom lock screen shortcuts? Let us know in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.
