Magisk 101: How to Install Magisk on Your Rooted Android Device

Magisk 101: How to Install Magisk on Your Rooted Android Device
When Google added new security measures to Android Marshmallow, it had a lasting impact on the entire process of rooting. These measures prevent the the Superuser daemon (the process that handles requests for root access) from getting the permissions it needs to do its job at boot. In order to get around these issues, Chainfire created the systemless root method.Following Chainfire's lead, other developers began moving their mods and tweaks away from Android's system partition. Developer topjohnwu was at the forefront of this trend when he made a systemless port of the Xposed Framework, but this project eventually evolved into what's now known as Magisk, a "magic mask" to alter system files without actually changing anything on the system partition. Not only does Magisk's systemless nature make mods easier to revert, but development of Magisk modules is extremely active now, making it the spiritual successor to Xposed. Let's take a look at the Magisk installation process below.Don't Miss: The 5 Best Phones for Rooting & Modding
Prerequisitesrooted Android device running Android Lollipop or higher

Step 1: Download Magisk ManagerMagisk is managed by Magisk Manager, similar to how SuperSU updates your root binaries and how the Xposed Installer helps you add modules for the Xposed Framework. Magisk Manager does the installing and updating of Magisk's underlying framework, and it provides a list of popular Magisk modules (such as systemless ViPER4Android and AdAway) which have been added to the Magisk repository. So to begin, install Magisk Manager from the Google Play Store. You can either search for it on the Play Store, or open the link below on your phone.Install Magisk Manager for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Launch Magisk Manager & Grant PermissionsOnce you've installed Magisk Manager, open it up and grant all of the permissions it requests. Superuser and storage permissions are required to correctly place the Magisk files in the appropriate directories and folders. After Magisk has all of the needed permissions, it'll automatically check to see if you have Magisk installed already. If not, it'll offer to take you to the download page. We're here for Magisk and the dozens of mods it brings to the table, so be sure to tap on the "Go to 'Install' Section" option.

Step 3: Install Magisk & RebootThe process of installing Magisk is pretty straightforward. First, tap on "Download & Install," then confirm your choice by hitting "Install" on the popup. Finally, tap "Reboot" to reboot and activate Magisk once installation has finished. When you get back up, you'll be all set and ready to try out some Magisk modules, which can be downloaded from the Modules section in Magisk Manager. Overall, installing Magisk opens up your phone to dozens of new apps and mods, and we'll definitely keep an eye out for all the ones that stand out from the crowd, so stay tuned right here. If you come across an awesome module, be sure to share it with us in the comment section below.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Use This Browser Extension to Open All Images on the Current Page in a New Tabbed Window

When you're looking at a site with a lot of links to images, it can get really old having to open each one individually. Not to mention loading so many pages can take forever.A browser extension called img2tab solves this problem by opening all the images on a page in a new window in separate tabs. It's available for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, and makes browsing sites like Reddit and Imgur a lot more convenient.Once it's installed, all you have to do is right-click on the page you want to convert, and img2tab will be added to the menu. Then, just choose whether you want it to open the actual images that are displayed on the current page, or the ones that are linked to. If the page has a lot of images, it's probably better to open them in a single tab, which displays them like this: The images will be the same size in the new tab or window, so if they're thumbnails, it will look like the screenshot above if you choose Actual Images, and they'll open up to their full size if you choose Linked Images. You can also use this to save a whole page full of images at once rather than having to grab each one separately. Overall, it's an easy-to-use extension that can make your browsing simpler.Know of any other good image viewing applications? Let us know in the comments below.

How To: Play Space Invaders & Other Old School Atari 2600 Games on Your Samsung Galaxy Note 2

Atari—it's the home gaming console officially responsible for starting the trend of sleepless nights and malnutrition amongst kids and adults alike. If you think Call of Duty is addicting, try playing Space Invaders in the '80s on the old Atari 2600 (voted the second greatest console of all time by IGN). Image via imgur.com While bad gaming habits have pretty much stayed the same over the last 30 years, technology has not, and it's thanks to that tech that we can fulfill our nostalgic need for '80s gaming. Two buttons, a shoddy joystick, 8-pixel resolution, lack of dimensions, and no online multiplayer—what's not to love?If you want to relive your Space Invaders days, or play other popular Atari games like Pitfall!, Adventure, Atlantis, and Missile Command, I'm going to show you right now how you can do so directly on your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (or other Android device). Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
How to Play Old Atari 2600 Games on the Note 2To play your old favorites, we'll be using an Atari 2600 emulator called Droid2600, which works for most Android devices. It's not available in the Google Play Store, so we'll need to enable Unknown Sources first...
Step 1: Enable Unknown SourcesIf it's not already enabled, go to Settings -> Security and make sure Unknown sources is checked. This allows you to install third-party apps outside of Google Play, which is what we'll be doing.

Step 2: Download Droid2600On your Galaxy Note 2, head over to ROMS4DROID and download and install the Droid2600 APK file.
Step 3: Find Atari Game ROMsNow, Droid2600 doesn't come with any games, so you'll have to find your own. It is possible to convert your old Atari games into a ROM, which is what you'll need, but it's much easier to just search for game ROM files online. A quick Google search should help you out, but make sure you're only downloading ROMs for games you already own, to play it safe.

Step 4: Open Droid2600Once you've found a ROM of Space Invaders or whatever, open Droid2600 and tap on Select ROM. You should scroll down and click on your Download folder, where you will find all the ROMs you have saved onto your device. For this guide, I will be testing out Pitfall!

Step 5: Play!Once you select your ROM, press Play and your game will start. If you tap Menu during the game, you can change what type of control you use (joystick, paddle, keypad, or tilt), as well as a control panel to save/load games and an option to reset the game. If you want other popular gaming console emulators on your Galaxy Note 2, check out all of our other gaming guides, which include the N64, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance, and more.

How To: 4 Android Apps That'll Help Start Your Morning Off Right

How To: 4 Android Apps That'll Help Start Your Morning Off Right
Starting your morning right is an essential first step to a productive day. Whether you're running late, rushing to catch up on the day's news, or lagging behind with early emails, little hiccups like these can have a trickle-down effect and ultimately ruin your day. Like with many problems, though, your smartphone can help.Using a combination of different apps, you can be informed, alert, and ready for the day before even leaving the house. These tools allow you to get the jump on various tasks that, when not addressed, can easily become overwhelming. And that starts with waking up on time.

1. Get Better Sleep with AMDroidStarting your day right is a process that actually begins the night before. It is important to get at least eight hours of sleep a night — not only does it this provide enough time for your brain to recharge, it also makes it easier to wake up on time the next day.Our phones are both a blessing and a curse in this regard, oftentimes distracting us well into the night. On the flip side of that, there are apps that can help make sure you get to bed on time. The best one we've found is called AMDroid, and it's quite an innovative alarm app.Install AMDroid for free from the Google Play Store AMDroid has a feature called "Sleep advice" that informs you of the optimal time to go to sleep in order to get a full eight hours. When enabled, you'll get a bedtime reminder the night before your alarm goes off. You can choose what time this message appears so you can make the necessary adjustments in order to be in bed at the recommend time, and you can increase or decrease the optimal sleep amount you wish to achieve. It even includes the ability to account for a grace period — the several minutes you spend lying in bed looking at the ceiling as you prepare to go to sleep. For even more control, you can even track your sleep and set the alarms based on your sleep cycles. Speaking of alarms, another major feature of AMDroid is the ability to set both pre and post alarms in addition to your default alarm. With pre-alarms, AMDroid will set an alarm before your main one to assist you with waking up on time. The idea is if you are already somewhat awakened by the first alarm, you consciously wake up on the main alarm. This alarm can be adjusted to either go off at a set interval or a random one. You can control how close and how far away the pre-alarm can be to the default alarm, which will also determine how many pre-alarms you will receive. You can even alter the sound to help you differentiate the different alarms while you are semi-conscious. And if you're like me and hate hearing the default alarm sound when you first wake up, you can change the pre-alarm to a more soothing sound to help better prepare you for the upcoming irritating one .For heavier sleepers, there is a post-alarm to make sure you don't wake up late. Ideally, if you find that you typically oversleep, set the post-alarm to the actual time you need to wake up. With the post-alarms, you set the time for the app to wait before confirming you are awake. Once the allocated time passes, the alarm will go off and continue to go off until you properly confirm you are conscious.

2. Stay Informed with PalabreNow that you're up, you'll probably want to read the morning news. However, finding news can be difficult and clunky. For example, while social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook are great sources, if they're not organized properly, they can be a jumbled mess where we easily miss the information that interests us. This is why I would recommending using an RSS reader, and one of the best apps in this category is Palabre.Install Palabre for free from the Google Play Store Palabre is a beautiful app that puts focus on the topics you want to read about. When first opening the app, you will be presented with popular categories and sources to occupy them. You can choose to use their categories or to create your own. Almost every site has an RSS feed these days, so sources are virtually limitless if you go the manual route — you can even add feeds from Reddit or Gadget Hacks. RSS readers like Palabre make it easy to scan articles headlines (and a brief introduction sentence) to decide if you want to learn more about the topic. Instead of having to search the web for articles, it's all done for you, so you just have to decide if you want to read it or not. With Palabre, before you head out to work, you can quickly read a few articles that will both expand your mind and keep you informed of the world at large. You may even learn of a new strategy or technology that can help you with organization. And to remain productive throughout the day, Palabre has a beautiful widget which can show one or more articles, providing you information at a glance. Widget can show multiple articles or just a single one.

3. Save Articles to Read Later with PocketOf course, reading stories online can easily get distracting. So before you go overboard with Palabre, let me tell you about another app called Pocket.Install Pocket for free from the Google Play Store Pocket simplifies the overwhelming amount of information that comes from RSS readers. While RSS readers are great tools to view an abundance of information quickly, what happens when you find multiple articles you want to read, but you don't have time? Typically, you would have to make a difficult choice of reading one and losing the other one. Pocket eliminates this ultimatum. With Pocket, you save those articles on a separate personal list which you view later. This list syncs across multiple platforms including the web, so you can view these saved articles whenever it makes more sense.Pocket is particularly useful if your news comes from multiple apps. As these apps notify you throughout the day of breaking news and other articles that may interest you, instead of reading the headline and dismissing them, you can open the article and quickly save it to Pocket to read later. Palabre has built-in support for Pocket. One of the most unique features of Pocket is the ability to listen to articles. Either tap the headphones icon on Pocket's main menu or choose "Listen" from the three-dot menu while viewing an article, then Pocket will begin to read any articles saved to its list. If you've got a long morning commute ahead of you, this is a great way to catch up on the news.

4. Get to Inbox Zero with GmailProbably the single greatest distraction in our day is email. Specifically, unimportant and frivolous emails which waste time each day. While the subject line typically gives it away, the email notification itself prompts you to take some type of action, such as deleting or archiving. The time to perform this action may seem minimal, but adds up as the day progresses. In an ideal world, we'd all be sitting at "inbox zero," meaning there are no emails left to deal with whatsoever. This can be hard to achieve, but fortunately, Google answered the call and introduced a feature in Gmail to help specifically with this problem.Install Gmail for free from the Google Play Store "Priority Inbox" analyzes your inbox and filters out trivial emails. Any incoming message deemed not important will be archived for later viewing. We wrote an article which went into more depth on Priority Inbox and how to enable the feature, so head to the link below for more information.Don't Miss: How to Enable Gmail's Priority Inbox With all four of these apps, it should be a lot easier to start your morning off right. No more oversleeping, no more wasted time sifting through the news or dealing with emails — just a streamlined morning routine thanks to some creative software. How To: How Google's Titan M Chip Makes the Pixel 3 One of Most Secure Android Phones

How To: How Google's Titan M Chip Makes the Pixel 3 One of Most Secure Android Phones
When Google introduced the Pixel 3 on October 9th, one of new additions they briefly mentioned was the Titan M security chip. While they did talk about how it will improve overall security, they didn't expand on the number of changes it brings to the Pixel 3's security. Well, they finally shared more, and it's a pretty big deal. The Titan M is a more advanced version of the hardware security module on last year's Pixel 2 lineup. They borrowed from the Titan chip used in their data centers and tailored it for mobile users (hence the M). And thanks to security improvements of Android 9.0 Pie, Google better integrated the security chip so that apps can also take advantage of its power. With the new improvements, both the OS and apps will benefit from secure hardware. Titan M will make sure your phone boots up with verified software each time, checking each layer of booting. Apps can be sure passwords and payments are authorized and uncorrupt as they leave your phone. The result is a potential end to exploits applied on locked phones, stronger encryption, and a rewrite of Google's past failures to protect its users.
Protecting Vertified BootExpanding on Android's Verified Boot system, Google is taking a page from BlackBerry and integrating the security chip into the secure boot process. The Pixel 3 will validate the version number of the Android operating system to ensure you are using the right version. Specifically, it offers rollback protection to prevent someone from downgrading your phone to an older Android version. This way, an attacker can't downgrade the operating system to circumvent new security tools introduced in the latest version. For the Pixel 3, this is very important, since Android 9.0 Pie introduced a host of new security features. By downgrading you to Oreo, an attacker could circumvent these upgrades. However, with the Android version now being verified in the Titan M chip, you're protected against foreign attacks during the verification process since the Titan M is separate from the SoC.Additionally, Titan M also protects your device from running a corrupted version of Android. During each boot-up, Verified Boot (performed in the Titan M) will ensure all code comes from a trusted source, requiring each partition to be checked before moving to the next one. Finally, by executing the verification process in the Titan M chip, it prevents exploits from unlocking the bootloader within Android. The bootloader won't pass the verification process, and it would fail to advance to the next stage. To be clear, this doesn't prevent you from unlocking the bootloader on the Pixel 3 — that's still as easy as ever.
Protect TransactionsWith Android 9.0 Pie, Google introduced Strongbox KeyStore APIs, a new tool which specifically dealt with the hardware security module. Using this API, Titan M can now generate and store private keys for apps, thereby extending its protection not only to the OS, but third-party apps as well.Android 9.0 Pie also introduced Protected Confirmation, a feature which displays a prompt asking a user to approve a short statement. By accepting the statement, the app can reaffirm the user read the message and is willing to complete the sensitive transaction such as payments or voting. Using Titan M, a key will be generated to sign the message. Because Titan M is separate from the OS, the signature is unique and leaves the app with a high level of certainty that the user has read the message and agreed to it.
Protection Against TamperingFor years, phones have used secure environments to protect encryption keys. These environments run firmware that is highly secure and responsible for checking the users' passcode to obtain the key to decrypt the storage partition. However, malicious users could attack this system by replacing the secure firmware they run with an exploitable one, making it easier for them to access. To prevent this, OEMs, including Google, apply a digital signature which confirms the software being used is from Google. However, attackers can defeat this process in one of two ways: find a vulnerability in the signature-confirmation process or gain access to a signed key and use that to sign their malicious software. The former is pretty difficult, but with the second option, keys can be captured using coercion or social engineering. Therefore, Google felt the need to improve this protection to prevent these keys from being accessible to the wrong individual. What Google has done with Titan M is improved protection by building in insider attack resistance. With this protection, Titan M is protected against the use of malicious software by preventing any updating to its firmware from occurring without the user first entering a passcode. This means that without your passcode to unlock your lock screen, there is no way for a malicious actor to change the firmware of the Titan M, resulting in the keys become comprised. This will make encryption of your Pixel 3 or 3 XL that much stronger and more resistant to tampering. With the changes Google is making, it looks like BlackBerry is rubbing off on them. Google is prioritizing security and doing everything they can to make sure your Pixel 3 and 3 XL is safe from unintended changes by utilizing the power of the Titan M security chip. What do you think about these changes? Are you excited about this level of protection? Immerse Yourself: How to Unlock KitKat's REAL Full Screen Mode on Your Nexus 7 Tablet
Full screen mode, also called immersive mode, is one of the most popular features on CyanogenMod, but it's almost exclusive to CM and other custom ROMs. What this feature does essentially is remove the Status bar and soft keys from your screen, creating a more mesmeric feel.I don't want to run a custom ROM, so I guess I'm assed out on this awesome feature. Nope. Not at all. Thanks to popular dev MohammadAG (whose mods we've covered time and time again), we can get immersive mode on our Nexus 7 tablets without a hitch. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Like the secret battery percentage bar and the hidden screen recording feature, this full screen mode is integrated into Android 4.4 KitKat, but not accessible by normal means. You will need a rooted device running Xposed Framework in order to get it.

Immerse Me: KitKat Immersive Mode for All AppsWith root and Xposed, go ahead and install MohammadAG's Immerse Me module onto your Nexus 7. You can download the latest APK right here. After it's installed, head to the Modules tab in the Xposed Installer app and check Immerse Me [1.0]. Then reboot your device to activate. It's so simple and easy that I don't really need to explain anything else to you, but let's see how it changes our device...

How Immerse Mode Looks on the Nexus 7Upon rebooting your Nexus 7, you'll notice your soft keys are hidden and so is your Status bar. To see your soft keys and Status bar, simply swipe down from the top of your screen, or swipe up from the bottom. Take a look at the contrast. Clean, right? This module worked for my stock 4.4 launcher, as well as my Google Experience Launcher (which it looks so much nicer on)—and check out how great landscape mode looks now! From now on, you'll be in full screen mode at all times—in any app. I'm really enjoying how much larger it makes my screen feel. If you get tired of it, just deactivate the module and reboot the device. Let me know what you all think, because I'm loving it.

How To: Top 4 Phones for Music Lovers & Audiophiles

How To: Top 4 Phones for Music Lovers & Audiophiles

While music may not technically be a "universe language," it is the one language listened to by all. There are over 1,500 music genres today—rap, classical, rock, jazz, trap, hip-hop, house, new wave, vaperwave, charred death, nintendocore... and the list goes on. And if you're like most people, you now probably listen to the majority of your music on your phone.According to Park Associates, 68% of US smartphone owners stream music on a daily basis—and that's just streaming. So whether you're using apps like Spotify or Pandora, listening to the radio, or going old school and playing MP3s and FLAC files that you downloaded from the internet or converted from CDs, the music lover inside of you needs a capable phone to truly set it free.A truly great listening experience depends on a variety of factors, including the hardware in your phone, the quality of the music, and the headphones that you're using. True Hi-Fi sound in a smartphone—the kind that would be pleasing to even the most discerning audiophile's ear—is made possible by a combination of top-of-the-line hardware like a dedicated amp and digital-to-analog converter, along with software that utilizes these components to their maximum potential.Don't Miss: The 4 Best Phones for Music Lovers That Cost Under $400To find that perfect balance, we tested several of the top smartphones on the market in an effort to uncover the ones that offered the best overall audio experience. Since there's nothing better than music that leaves you with an otherworldly feeling, we made sure that the following phones not only have the best hardware available, but that they also support the best software enhancements available to consumers. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks
Key Comparison PointsWhen it comes to picking a device with the best audio quality playback, there are quite a few key factors that need to be looked at.DAC: A digital-to-analog converter, or DAC, allows the phone's digital audio to be sent to a headphone amp by converting it into an analog audio signal. A dedicated 32-bit DAC is better than a dedicated 16-bit DAC because it ultimately allows for audio playback in a higher bit rate. A dedicated 32-bit quad DAC is much better than a single dedicated 32-bit DAC because when a device has more DACs, it can generally process higher frequency music faster. Headphone Amp: Once the DAC converts the audio into an analog signal, it's sent over to the headphone amp where it is then amplified before being sent on to your headphones. In other words, with a more powerful amplifier, louder output volume can pushed to your headphones. When it comes to figuring out which headphone amp is better, there's only a couple of things that come into play: the number of watts powering the amplifier, and the amount of volts being pushed out to the 3.5 mm jack. The amp's wattage can't usually be checked without taking apart the phone itself, but we are able to measure how many volts are being pushed through the 3.5 mm jack. Hi-Fi Playback Capability: High fidelity, or Hi-Fi, playback is tied in with the phone's DAC, so what we want is high numbers for both bits and frequency. In other words, the higher the bits and frequency in the DAC category above, the higher the quality of music that's being pushed to your headphones. The lowest bit and frequency combination accepted as Hi-Fi is 16-Bit, 44.1 KHz (also known as CD Quality). This means roughly 10 megabytes of data per minute is used while streaming Hi-Fi music from compatible services such as Tidal and Deezer Elite, or an average of 40 megabytes in storage space if you're playing back locally-stored files. Audio Codec: A phone's codec is a piece of software which manages how the digital audio files are handled and processed. With the combination of a good codec and DAC, higher quality Hi-Fi files can be played. Most OEMs don't really bother with audio quality, so they tend to use the generic codec provided by their CPU's manufacturer. However, companies that prioritize audio quality will use a codec that was created in-house, so a good rule of thumb is if the codec wasn't created by the CPU's manufacturer (e.g., Qualcomm), it's generally better. Stock Applications: We scored these device's stock music players and equalizers by counting the number of options available to play with. Some stock apps have only the bare minimum functionality (like the music player on the ZTE Axon 7, which can't do anything besides play and pause), while others come with enough features to make third-party players and equalizers irrelevant (such as on the LG V20). One final thing to note here is that the HTC 10 does not come with a purpose-built stock music player, and instead, uses Google Play Music, which is preinstalled on all Android devices anyway. Overall Audio Accessibility: Audio accessibility is all about how easy it is to make use of these phones's awesome audio hardware. Ultimately, the software on a phone will determine exactly how the hardware is used, and depending on the device, this can be relatively simple or slightly complex. Considerations that impacted this rating were how easy or hard it was to toggle the DAC and amp on or off, enable features like HTC's BoomSound, and access equalizer presets. Maximum Output: This is simply how loud the signal sent through the 3.5 mm headphone jack is, listed in decibels (dB). On the surface, the ability to play back music louder than other devices is an obvious plus, but that's also the fastest way to lose your hearing, so be careful when maxing out the volume on a couple of these phones. Signal-to-Noise Ratio: The level of a desired signal compared to the level of background noise. In other words, the level of music versus the amount of hiss you might hear. The higher the ratio, the less obtrusive the background noise is, and the more enjoyable your music will be. While the word "ratio" may throw you off, this is measured in decibels here, too. Any ratio higher than 1:1, or 0 dB, means more signal than noise, so the higher the number the better. Stereo Crosstalk: This represents any bleeding that might occur between the two audio channels of the device (left and right). The lower this decibel value is, the less interference there will be between the two channels. The easiest way to check this yourself is to listen to a song and see if you notice the stereo effect—if not, it's probably because there's a lot of crosstalk, which causes the two channels to seemingly condense into mono sound. 3.5 mm Jack Voltage: A measurement of how hot the signal being sent through the 3.5 mm jack is, which is closely tied with the device's maximum decibel output. The higher the voltage, the louder the music, so we're going with bigger is better here as well. Frequency Response: This is a measurement of how accurately the amplifier is able to reproduce the audio after converting it. What we want is to be closer to zero in this case, which would represent a perfect replication of sound output across the frequency range of human hearing. But, of course, no audio equipment is absolutely perfect in this regard, so each of these devices fell in a range between two decibel values when we tested them (a positive and a negative number). The numbers listed here are the highest deviation from zero after multiple tests on the devices. In other words, the closer these numbers are to zero, the better the frequency response of the device. Note: The above field testing data (Maximum Output, Signal-to-Noise Ratio, Stereo Crosstalk, 3.5 mm Jack Voltage, and Frequency Response) was measured with each device running its latest available firmware as of February 16, 2017.
Testing Methodology & AnalysisIn addition to simply listening to the music output from each of these phones, we also had to get some exact figures to see how these phones stacked up against one another. To do that, we hooked the phones up to FuzzMeasure on an iMac by running them through a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20. The Focusrite Scarlett is capable of processing and breaking down the highest quality audio playback from all of the devices, and FuzzMeasure gave us readings on these measurements. With so many phones capable of Hi-Fi playback, we loaded them up with our favorite variety of high quality FLAC files, then used the stock music apps to see how each phone performed. We used 24-bit 48 kHz files each time to ensure that the test would be fair for all phones.High quality audio should have a high signal-to-noise ratio, low stereo crosstalk interference, and an accurate frequency response, so these measurements made it into our chart. There are a few other things that can be looked for, such as dynamic range, harmonic distortion, and intermodulation distortion, but we didn't include these results, as they just aren't as important as the others. The starting price was sourced from Amazon, with each phone showing the cost of the unlocked variants of these devices. The DAC, amp, and codec names were either found on the manufacturer's website, or left as "Undisclosed" when there wasn't any real data available. As for the voltage check, we rigged up an oscilloscope to a voltmeter, then used an auxiliary cable to get a reading while having the stock players play a song for us.
Selection & RatingThe phones in this list were all picked mainly for one reason: They all come packed with hardware that gives them an audio output far superior to that of other phones which were released in the United States within the last two years. This means they have at least a dedicated DAC and amp combination, as well as a 3.5 mm headphone jack. All of the phones in our list meet this criteria with flying colors. There are a few phones from the past couple of years which didn't make it onto our list, and that's simply because the hardware they came with wasn't good enough. The fact that all of the phones in this list run Android is because there's just so much variety on the platform, since OEMs are able to do practically whatever they want to make their phone stand out against their competitors.Don't Miss:The 4 Best Phones for Privacy & SecurityThe iPhone 7 and 7 Plus might boast superior audio when compared to Apple's previous offerings, but that only applies to the built-in speaker quality. And besides, iPhone 7 models were immediately ruled out because they don't have a headphone jack, which means that music can only be listened to over Bluetooth or via the Lightning port. Both of these conduits are severely lacking when compared to audio from a 3.5 mm jack.We did test the iPhone 6S, and while it does have a dedicated DAC and amp combination, as well as a 3.5 mm headphone jack, the audio quality was just horrifying. To Apple's credit, the iPhone 6S is a loud phone, but there is way too much noticeable hissing in the background. Not only that, but the lows and mids are practically nonexistent, because the highs completely overpower them. All of that considered, we were left with the following four phones.

1. LG V20The LG V20 was released in September 2016, and is LG's second phone in the V series. It comes with much higher specifications than its predecessor, the V10, and it sounds even better in the audio department. LG sold 200,000 units of the V20 in the first ten days after release, and the company says that the phone has been selling strongly ever since. Even though LG has stated they're taking losses in the mobile division, they certainly haven't blamed any of it on the V20. Image by Katie Puccio/Gadget Hacks The LG V20 is our favorite phone for audiophiles, and for a good reason. The V20 comes packed with an intelligent 32-bit quad DAC, along with an extremely loud and powerful amp. However, all of this hardware comes at a hefty price. The LG V20 costs a whopping $799.99 USD, though this is probably worth it if you're a true audiophile.Even though the LG V20 supports audio through its 3.5 mm jack and the USB Type-C port, the hardware components (dedicated DACs and amp) only kick in if the 3.5 mm jack is being used. This is exactly what we want, since most of us audiophiles have a fairly expensive pair of cans with a price tag close to the one on the phone.Taking a look at the numbers, we're able to see exactly what the LG V20 is capable of. For starters, with the quad DAC turned off, the LG V20 has an approximate output of 65 dB (very close to an air conditioner on full blast) while connected to low-impedance headphones, such as 16 ohm headphones. Turn the quad DAC on, though, and the output jumps to a little over 69 dB, which is about as loud as a running shower. Now remember, the quad DAC on the V20 is an intelligent one. This means that, depending on the impedance (in ohms) of the headphones connected to it, it'll send the appropriate signal so that the headphones don't get overwhelmed. This is for a good reason, as most common 16 ohm headphones can't handle more than a certain amount of input, and begin to sound as though they might blow out.Don't Miss: How to Root the LG V20 (US Variant)The V20's High Impedance mode will turn on automatically if the connected headphones are 50 ohms or higher. This throws an astounding 88 dB of audio in your direction, which is as loud as a lawn mower. Imagine having that directly in both of your ears for a couple of hours. But let's say you connect your V20 to your home stereo using an auxiliary (AUX) cable. The phone knows when you've connected an AUX cable instead of a pair of headphones because it can tell how many rings are on the plug (headphones have three rings, AUX cables only have two). With the quad DAC off, you get a decent 71 dB of volume in External Audio Device mode, but the V20 pushes a whopping 75 dB of volume, which is comparable to a vacuum cleaner, with the quad DAC on. At this level, your music will sound really loud and amazingly clear. 16 ohm headphones plugged in (left), 50+ ohm headphones plugged in (middle), and external speakers connected via an AUX cable (right). While these numbers were recorded with the volume on the device maxed out, it's important to note that, when connected to headphones, it can get so loud that it's actually uncomfortable to listen to. In this case, the wearer gets overwhelmed, which is the main reason why the LG V20 is marked as "Average" in the Overall Audio Accessibility category above—because of how complicated it is to use all of the hardware you've payed for.The LG V20 supports lossless audio, in both FLAC and and ALAC audio formats. It can also play anything up to 32-bit at 384 kHz, but only through the preinstalled LG Music app. If you listen to lossy audio formats such as MP3 and AAC, don't worry, LG hasn't left you out. The LG Music app also comes with a decent equalizer for lossy music, including a five-band equalizer for those who want to manually adjust their sound. The equalizer has six presets: Normal, Pure surround, QuadBeat, Bass booster, Treble booster, and Vocal booster. On top of that, a manual mode allows you to play with the main Hz, so you'll be able to find a perfect sweet spot. If there's any complaint with the LG V20, it would be that there is a small amount of stereo crosstalk. It's not bad enough to catch your attention, but if you do listen for it, you'll notice it every so often.Buy an LG V20 from Amazon ($799)

2. HTC 10The HTC 10 was released in May 2016, and is HTC's fifth audio-oriented flagship phone. The first audio-oriented phone released by HTC was the HTC One X back in 2013, so sound quality has been a priority for the Taiwanese phone maker for a while. While HTC hasn't released any actual sales figures on the HTC 10, we do know that they had a 42% revenue increase in September 2016, and a 31% year-on-year rise to a 15-month high of $297 million. Image by Katie Puccio/Gadget Hacks Even though the HTC 10 only has a 24-bit DAC, it sounds at least as good as all of the other phones in our list, due to a strong amp and software optimizations put in place by HTC. Instead of simply using the Aqstic audio codec by Qualcomm like it was originally rumored to, HTC opted to include a different one, which turns out to have far superior audio quality. Qualcomm initially advertised the HTC 10 as one of the first devices to come with the chip maker's own codec, however, HTC released the 10 with Aqstic merely as a fallback codec. They used their own undisclosed and proprietary codec to handle music being played from the stock application. From Beats to BoomSound, HTC has always been well known for its audio quality, and the 10 doesn't disappoint. HTC BoomSound was introduced as the replacement of Beats Audio once HTC's partnership with Beats by Dre came to an end. BoomSound is an audio profile which enhances the three main components of your music for an exceptional playback sound: Crystal-clear highs, smooth vocals, and deep bass. The easiest way to describe BoomSound is as a background equalizer. You might not have much control over it, but it will do its job if turned on. Besides BoomSound running in the background, the HTC 10 also comes with Dolby Audio that runs in the background as well. Dolby Audio is also a profile, one which tailors itself to your type of headphones and listening preferences after making you sit through a sort of pop quiz. This setting can easily be turned on and off, and is usable with more than just the stock music player, which is a fantastic thing. In general, using the HTC 10 is very simple, there aren't a lot of options to get confused with, and it still delivers amazing audio quality. My only gripes are that the HTC 10 isn't technically capable of playing Hi-Fi audio, and its stock music player is the incredibly basic Google Play Music, which we can't even uninstall. This is your only choice if you want to listen to locally-stored music files with HTC's codec, as every third-party player gets used with the Qualcomm Aqstic codec instead. However, if you stream music, then everything works perfectly—the HTC codec works with Spotify, Pandora, and every other streaming service we tested it with.Buy an HTC 10 from Amazon ($600)

3. LG V10The LG V10 might have been released a little over a year ago, but it still managed to outperform almost all of the newer devices in terms of audio quality. The LG V10 is just as loud as the HTC 10, but it doesn't have all of the software fine-tuning. Since the V10 was LG's first attempt at a real audio-oriented phone, there were a fair number of bumps along the way with early firmware versions. Despite this, LG did sell 450,000 V10s in the first 45 days of sales. Image by Katie Puccio/Gadget Hacks The biggest issue holding the V10 back from second place in our list is the actual DAC usage. Normally, the DAC will only kick into effect when being used with the stock LG Music application. If you're using a third-party player or a streaming service such as Spotify, the generic Qualcomm DAC gets used instead of the 32-bit hi-res DAC. Not many people appreciated this limitation, and so the Hi-Fi Everywhere app was born, which forces the dedicated ESS SABRE DAC to be used whenever there's a pair of headphones connected, no matter what application is being used. Speaking of the stock music player app, LG Music offers a decent set of options for fine-tuning on the V10, and, of course, supports true Hi-Fi sound. There's a system-wide equalizer, too, and it gives you six useful presets with a seventh option that allows for complete manual control over your audio. However, the overall audio accessibility suffers for the same reasons that the V20 did—LG's software just makes things a bit too complicated. On the plus side, the V10 does support an external memory card up to 2 TB (which was practically unheard of at the time of its release). So if you're looking for a cheap phone which can be used to play all of your Hi-Fi music files, this phone will be able to match or exceed all of the newer phones when it comes to storage space. This basically means you can save all of the Hi-Fi audio files you have and listen to your music through the stock music player app.More good news is that the LG V10 has almost no stereo crosstalk, a great frequency response, and a low signal-to-noise ratio. This phone delivers loud music with a very low amount of audible hissing, close to no audio bleeding, and truly authentic sounds.Buy an LG V10 from Amazon ($288)

4. ZTE Axon 7The ZTE Axon 7 is a midrange phone released in 2016, but it comes packed with about as much high-end audio hardware as the rest of the phones in our list. There haven't been any figures released on how well the phone has been selling, but the general sentiment amongst developers and music lovers seems to be extremely positive. Image by Katie Puccio/Gadget Hacks The ZTE Axon 7 is most certainly a capable phone for audiophiles. It isn't quite as loud as the LG V20, nor is the audio as crisp when listening through a pair of headphones, but it can definitely hold its own. Most notably, it has a dedicated DAC and amp combo, as well as a custom audio codec, which are all used in conjunction with one another to play Hi-Fi music in the stock music app.To expand on that last point, the ZTE Axon 7 is capable of playing Hi-Fi files up to 24-bit at 192 kHz. This puts it in the same ballpark as the HTC 10, but it comes with a severe restriction: Hi-Fi audio files can only be played through ZTE's stock music player. To make matters worse, the stock ZTE player is extremely limited in terms of functionality—it is literally capable of doing nothing more than playing and pausing your audio files. Couple this with a fairly limited stock equalizer that only includes four presets, and it makes the Axon 7's overall audio accessibility rather poor. In comparison to the LG V20, the Axon 7's maximum output volume is just a few decibels behind the V20's High Impedance mode, so it's plenty loud. There is a bit of stereo crosstalk (more on that later), but the Axon 7 still tested higher than the LG V10 in this regard. Other notable testing results included a high signal-to-noise ratio and a 1.8-volt headphone jack output, which both ranked second only to the LG V20—a phone that costs more than twice as much. When listening to music on the Axon 7, there seemed to be noticeable stereo crosstalk, though this was not supported by our field testing results. You can't exactly max out the volume since it'll get uncomfortable, but when you listen at a lower level, the crosstalk becomes more noticeable, so it's hard to find the perfect volume level. However, the ZTE Axon 7 still outputs an audio quality far superior to that of the iPhone 6S—just avoid the first and last three volume steps.Buy a ZTE Axon 7 from Amazon ($389)
ConclusionThe LG V20 is the clear and obvious winner as our favorite phone for music lovers and audiophiles. It has the hardware, it has the software, and it uses both fantastically. The HTC 10 was a close runner up, but it just couldn't keep up. The LG V10 did very nicely for a phone that was released over a year ago, and is still being praised by people all over for such a nice audio performance. The ZTE Axon 7 managed to stand out as a solid budget-friendly option by packing similar internals to that of the HTC 10, but at a lower price.Don't Miss: The 5 Best Phones for Video ChatFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Customize or Remove the Home Screen Search Bar in the Google Now Launcher
With the release of the Nexus 5 back in 2013 came the Google Now Launcher, which has become the go-to choice for many Android users, especially those who prefer the Nexus line. With its integration of the Google Now page and the always-listening hotword detection, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more complete and useful launcher.Yet as advantageous as it is, Google seems to lay some strict rules when it comes to customizing their launcher, the simplest of which being the ability to opt out of the persistent Google Search widget, a permanent fixture on every home screen page.In the past, we've given you a broad overview of the Xposed GEL Settings mod and how you can use it to add swipe gestures to the launcher, but today I'll be going over the various search bar options it has, including removing the bar completely. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Step 1: Get Your Device ReadyThis process will indeed work for Android 5.0 Lollipop. With that being said, you will also need to be rooted. If you're unsure on how to root, then just take a look at our easy-to-follow Android root guide. After rooting your device, be sure to install the Xposed Framework so that the application we're installing can work. For those of you running Lollipop, check out the Xposed Framework guide for Lollipop.

Step 2: Install Xposed GEL SettingsHead over to the Google Play Store to install Xposed GEL Settings, then make sure to properly activate the module.

Step 3: Customize Your Search BarUpon opening the application, access the side menu panel and select "Google Search Bar" from the various options. From within these settings, you can remove the search bar altogether, make it visible only on the main home page, or strictly on the Google Now page if you choose to do so. If you like the bar and just want to add some character to it, try applying a custom color. You can make it any color you want and also adjust the transparency level. I'd also suggest trying the full-on transparent look, so it's less conspicuous on your display while still being able to utilize the feature. Because I refuse to claim defeat and install a third-party launcher with customization options, GEL Settings is definitely a godsend. Try it out and let us know what you think in the comments below.Make sure to follow Android Hacks over on Facebook and Twitter, or Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, for more Android tips.
