How To: Stop Lag & Save Battery on Your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 by Hibernating Background Apps

How To: Stop Lag & Save Battery on Your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 by Hibernating Background Apps
If your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has been feeling sluggish lately, or you've noticed the battery not lasting as long as usual, the problem could be that you have too many applications running in the background.Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook, among other apps, like to run persistently, refreshing all of the time in order to update you with new notifications. This constant use of resources creates lag on your Android device, as it needs to repeatedly work and strain, even when you're not specifically using the apps.
How You Can Take Control Over Your AppsToday, we're going to make sure your device doesn't work more than it needs to. We can do this using Greenify from Android dev Oasis Feng, which puts power and memory hungry apps into hibernation whenever you're not specifically using them. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Step 1: Make Sure You're RootedIn order for Greenify to work on your Galaxy Note 2, you'll need to be rooted. If you're not already rooted, check out our complete softModder guide on doing so with ODIN. Also, make sure to back up your device when installing any apps that require root.
Step 2: Install GreenifyDownload and install Greenify from Google Play. If for some reason you can't get it there, you can download the APK directly, but you'll need to make sure Unknown sources is checked in your Security settings before doing so.

Step 3: Putting Apps in HibernationOnce you've downloaded and installed Greenify, click on the + sign to check out the apps running on your device that consume the most memory. There will be four different categories into which the apps are separated:Running in background Scheduled running (since last startup) May slow down the device when... Recently running From there, you can select which apps you want to go into hibernation when you're not actively using them, and press the check mark sign to "greenify" them.
What You Shouldn't Use Greenify ForSince the background functionality of the apps selected will become out of service during hibernation, you should not use Greenify on apps in which you expect (or need) any of the following:Persistent background services Broadcast receivers Alarms Widget update Push messages Once an app is in hibernation, all of the features in the list above will be out of service unless you have the app open on the screen. Having a longer lasting battery is definitely not worth being late for work.
Want More Features? If you want to try out some additional experimental features like the ability to Greenify system apps and allow GCM push notifications during hibernation, you can get the "donation version" for $2.99.

How To: Get Back the Old (& Better) Bookmarks Manager in Chrome

How To: Get Back the Old (& Better) Bookmarks Manager in Chrome

Chrome has been pushing out a lot of new changes lately, but not all of them are as good as they think they are. Earlier this year, there was an update that changed how user profiles worked, which made it harder to actually switch profiles. Luckily, there was a way to get back the old profile management interface, but now there's another "improvement" that you might want to change—Chrome's new Bookmarks Manager interface. The actual Bookmarks Manager looks way different, focusing on boxes and colors that are hard to focus on and read. There is an obvious difference between folders and webpages, but it's not that obvious because of the colors and box shapes, especially if you have a ton of folders and webpages. The new system: a harder-to-read, color- and box-based navigation menu. For those who use the Bookmarks Bar a lot, the new update to the Bookmarks Manager is a step in the wrong direction. Now, whenever you click on the star icon in the right side of the address bar, the page is automatically bookmarked and added to "All Items" in the Manager, as well as a new folder in the Bookmarks Bar called "Other Bookmarks." The new system: using the star to bookmark a page, which goes into "Other Bookmarks." If you like to stay organized, you can choose to move the webpage into a new or existing folder in your Bookmarks Bar, but it's a little exhausting to do so if you have sub-folders.The new edit bookmarks panel recommends the last folder used, which is hardly what you want, and navigating to another folder is awkward since you have to use the arrows as opposed to clicking on the name itself. Also, the folders are in alphabetical order, not how they're ordered in the Bookmarks Bar itself. The new system: It's hard to navigate through folders and subfolders. You can still right-click on the Bookmarks Bar to add a new webpage, which will give you an easier way to organize new bookmarks, but if you want the simpler Bookmarks Manager back, there's a way to revert.
Update: June 9th, 2015Thankfully, Google has decided to bring back to the old Bookmarks Manager as the default one. You should see the old version come back to your Chrome browser shortly. If not, you can still use the instructions below until you do. And if for some reason you actually like the newer Bookmarks Manager above, you can install it from the Chrome Web Store.

How to Switch Back to the Old Bookmarks ManagerReverting back to the old Bookmarks Manager interface is as simple as it was for reverting back to the old user profiles—using a Chrome Flag. Just go to chrome://flags/#enhanced-bookmarks-experiment, disable the feature, and relaunch Chrome. Alternatively, you can do the following.Visit chrome://flags in the URL address box Search for "Enable Enhanced Bookmarks" Switch "Default" to "Disabled" Hit the "Relaunch Now" button Disable "Enable Enhanced Bookmarks" and relaunch Chrome. After your browser relaunches, the old star-based bookmark interface for adding new webpages to your Bookmarks Bar (or wherever) will return. Note that this change will affect all of your user profiles in Chrome, not just the one you're currently using. The old system: Simple is better; no confusing navigation; bookmarks arranged in order. Additionally, the actually Bookmarks Manager will looks normal again, with its file-based structure that's easy to see and read. No more getting lost in bright colors and huge boxes. Which system do you like better? The older Bookmarks Manager or the newer version? Personally, I'm never going back to the new one because I use the star icon as my go-to for adding things to the Bookmarks Bar, and I'm used to the old-style process.Follow Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter!

How To: Convert Your LG Optimus G into a Google Nexus 4

How To: Convert Your LG Optimus G into a Google Nexus 4

Since the introduction of the Nexus 4 to the Google Play Store last November, the phone's been in constant demand thanks to the low price and sleek design. Even today, the phone is still listed as sold out. LG's Nexus 4 is also the only smartphone in circulation that can run a naked version of the Android operating system; one that does not come loaded with a manufacturer UI running over top of it.All of the improvements in hardware that the phone has are a rework of the LG Optimus G, with more advanced software and an even sleeker design. They're so similar, in fact, that you can actually convert an LG Optimus G into a Nexus 4, which is great considering that the Nexus 4 is always sold out—always.Don't believe me?XDA Developers Team CodeFire and rohan32 have discovered how to convert your LG Optimus G into a Nexus 4 8GB. Everything on the LGOG is remapped to Nexus 4 stuff, including the partitions and bootloader. With this, you can now flash anything from Nexus 4 forums on XDA. Basically, everything about your phone will now be a Nexus 4, minus the look. Nexus 4 (on the left) and the LG Optimus G (on the right)Instructions:Download this file. Extract the .tot file out of the zip file you just downloaded. Rename the .tot file to have a file extension of .bin (you should now have LGE960AT-00-V10c-NXS-XX-OCT-25-2012-JVP15Q-USER+0.bin). Install LGNPST and the necessary drivers, then start the program. Connect your phone by putting it into download mode and connecting via USB cable (hold Power + Volume Up + Volume Down). Wait until your device is recognized by your PC. Where it says DLL File, select lgnpst_ls970.dll. In the file selector below that, select the .bin file you renamed before. Start the flashing process. Let it complete. It should hit 85% and then come up with an error saying the device was disconnected. That's fine, just close out of LGNPST. At this point your phone should be booting with the Google Nexus boot animation. In Case It Doesn't Boot:If it doesn't boot in 5 minutes or so, get into the Nexus bootloader by holding Volume Up + Power. Make sure that "FASTBOOT MODE" is in red on the bootloader and connect your phone again. Run the following fastboot command: fastboot -w. This will wipe ALL of your data. Essentially it is a factory reset. Press the power button to select "START" in the bootloader. It should boot now all the way through. If everything has worked fine, you can now flash anything Nexus on the device and it should work fine. If you want to install a custom recovery:Download any Nexus 4 recovery you want (I prefer TWRP). Reboot into the bootloader using Power + Volume Up. Run this command: fastboot flash recovery <path-to-recovery.img> If you want to return to the stock ROM, download this zip, follow the same steps as above when flashing the .bin in LGNPST and your device should now return to its factory settings. For more help on converting your Optimus G into a Nexus 4, visit the original forum discussion.

Android Basics: How to Enable Developer Options & USB Debugging

Android Basics: How to Enable Developer Options & USB Debugging
Many Android utilities use Android Debug Bridge, or ADB for short, to send commands from a computer over to your phone or tablet. This enables such utilities to run terminal commands that, in some cases, wouldn't be possible on Android without root access. Before getting started with an ADB mod on the computer side of things, you'll need to enable "USB debugging" on your Android device. But this option is hidden in a secret settings menu that you'll need to activate first.

Step 1: Activate the Hidden 'Developer Options' MenuThese settings may vary slightly depending on your device, but the general gist of it should be about the same. To begin, head to the main Settings menu on your Android device, then scroll all the way to the bottom and select "About phone," "About tablet," or "About device." From here, scroll down towards the bottom of the list again, then tap the "Build number" entry 7 times in rapid succession. For an Amazon Fire device, you would go to Settings -> Device options, then tap repeatedly on the "Serial number." If you have a newer device, like a Samsung Galaxy S9 or a Google Pixel running Android P, it's slightly different, so hit those links to see how it's done. At this point, you should see a toast message saying that "You are now a developer," which means you've unlocked the hidden Developer options menu.

Step 2: Enable 'USB Debugging'Next, back out one level to head to the main Settings menu again. Near the bottom of this screen, select the "Developer options" entry that you just unlocked. From here, tick the box next to the "USB debugging" entry, then press "OK" on the popup. At this point, your Android device is almost ready, but the computer side of the connection will need to be configured before you can fully utilize ADB. For more on that topic, Windows users can use this guide, and Mac users can start here.

Step 3: Allow USB Debugging ConnectionOnce the drivers and software have been configured on your computer, connect your Android device to your desktop or laptop with a USB data cable. At this point, you should see a message on your Android device asking if you'd like to allow this computer to connect. Tick the box next to "Always allow from this computer" on this message, then press "OK." If you don't see this message, it could be due to a conflict with your phone or tablet's USB storage connection. If this is the case, head to your device's main Settings menu, then select "Storage." From here, tap the three-dot menu button at the top of the screen, then choose "USB computer connection." From here, if "Media device (MTP)" is selected, change this option to "Camera (PTP)" instead. At this point, you should see the "Allow USB debugging" message that you missed out on earlier. With USB debugging enabled on your Android device, you're now ready to send ADB commands over from your computer. What are some of your favorite ADB utilities? Let us know in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Android Hacks' Facebook or Twitter, or on Gadget Hacks' Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

Ranked: The 3 Best Gaming Phones

Ranked: The 3 Best Gaming Phones
Mobile gaming still isn't on par with video game consoles or PCs, but we've come a long way from Snake. Modern games running on the latest smartphones boast downright impressive graphics—even more so when you consider how compact the system has to be in order to fit in people's pockets. There are a lot of options out there for anyone looking to buy a new phone, but gamers have very specific needs—and not just any old device will do. Lucky for you, we've gone out and tested the best smartphones around so that you can be sure not to waste your money. Out of the 8 devices we tested, we narrowed down the choices to the top 3 you'll find below. What we were looking for is the strongest performing devices with the least amount of compromises.
How We Picked & Scored Each PhoneWe ran a series of tests to determine which phones would make this list. We looked at graphics and compute performance, display, battery life, how hot the device got, touchscreen sensitivity and resistance, speaker quality and placement, and more.To get the hard numbers, we used the 3DMark gaming benchmark tool which measures a device's graphics performance. 3DMark is a cross-platform tool that tests the GPU and CPU performance of mobile devices, which allowed us to compare these devices with objective metrics about their hardware and software. A modern flagship phone will usually receive a score somewhere between 2,000 and 2,700. As you'll see below, that range is somewhat consistent for the devices listed here.Of course, just numbers won't tell you whether a phone is going to be great for real-world usage, so we actually did some gaming on these devices to put them through some real-use stress. In our hands-on evaluations, we used the popular first-person shooter, Modern Combat 5: Blackout (MC5:B), available for both Android and iOS, to test both single-player and online gameplay.Every device was at 100% battery and connected to the strongest open Wi-Fi signal we had available. We played MC5:B for 30 minutes (20 minutes in single-player and 10 in online multiplayer), starting from the opening tutorial, and making as close to the same choices and actions as possible each time. This allowed us to see how the phones handled during actual use, and to get a sense of what sort of issues might come up during extended gaming sessions. With 10 questions scored in 5 different categories, we converted the total score for each device into a percentage and then again into the value of x/10, as you'll see in the rankings. Keep in mind that even though devices might receive the same final hands-on score, it may be for different reasons. You'll find both the 3DMark scores as well as our hands-on scores in the tables for each device below. These are our picks for the best phones a gamer could buy, in order starting with the best:

#1. ZTE Axon 7 — Scores: 2,615 (3DMark) + 7.6/10 (Hands-On)With 3DMark and hands-on scores like these, the ZTE Axon 7 is the clear winner. Running on the Snapdragon 820 processor with 4 GB RAM and the Adreno 530 GPU puts this phone in a league well above its $400 price point, as do the solid-aluminum body and its top-quality 1,440 x 2,560 (~538 PPI) Samsung AMOLED display. MC5:B on the ZTE Axon 7. Image by Carib Guerra/Gadget Hacks ZTE Axon 7 Specs:Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 Adreno 530 GPU 4 GB RAM 5.5" AMOLED display 1,440 x 2,560 (538 ppi) Front-facing stereo speakers Li-Ion 3,250 mAh battery Android 6.0.1Gamers and video fans alike will love the front-facing stereo speakers and Dolby Atmos sound. Without a doubt, these are far and away the best speakers I've ever heard on a smartphone. The effect is almost enough to make you forget that you're on a device that can fit in your pocket. As far as input goes, the default touchscreen controls were steady and responsive, but they did feel a bit sluggish. The control settings can be adjusted, but our tests were run on default.Out of all the phones we tested, the Axon 7 is the best all-around phone for gaming. If you can deal with one impressively idiotic design flaw:On most modern Android phones, the trio of buttons used to navigate within and between apps and the home screen are virtual. They appear when you need them and otherwise stay out of the way. For some reason, ZTE decided to buck the trend by added static capacitive navigation buttons on the chin of the device. When playing a game in landscape mode, gripped in both hands, it's way too easy to brush one of these buttons and exit out of your game. That's either a constant pester or, in the case of competitive multiplayer games, a severe handicap. Accidentally exiting the game with the capacitive buttons. Image by Carib Guerra/Gadget Hacks The Axon 7 would be the perfect gamer's phone, if not for these completely unnecessary buttons. They're an ugly blemish on an otherwise handsome display; they're awkwardly close together, making a reasonably sized device unwieldy; they aren't backlit, which is supremely annoying in the dark; and all of that could be overlooked if there were just some way of toggling them off. There's not. In a truly bizarre move, the only option ZTE provides for these buttons is to invert which side activates the back or recent apps actions—because some people apparently prefer their backs in the front. That said, once you know the buttons are there, it's a simple adjustment in grip to avoid them. Everything else about gaming with this phone was a pleasure. Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks

#2. Apple iPhone 7 Plus — Scores: 2,250 (3DMark) + 7.6/10 (Hands-On)As I said in the introduction, benchmark scores aren't the most important point of reference when determining whether or not a device will be great for gaming. The iPhone 7 Plus may have received a lower score from 3DMark than the Axon 7, but in our hands-on test, it scored higher in the graphics department due to the vibrant colors and seamless animation. We didn't go into the testing with any expectations about which devices would come out on top, and it was a very close call between these two. MC5:B on the iPhone 7 Plus. Image by Carib Guerra/Gadget Hacks Apple iPhone 7 Plus Specs:Apple A10 Apple A10 GPU 3 GB RAM 5.5" Retina HD display 1,920 x 1,080 (401 ppi) Front (top) and bottom stereo speakers Li-Ion 2,900 mAh battery iOS 10.1Your games will look beautiful on the iPhone 7 Plus. They'll run silky-smooth, and you'll have plenty of screen to see them. There's no doubt that this is a fantastic all-around phone, but when it comes to gaming, two unfortunate issues bumped the 7 Plus into second place.First, the over-sensitive touchscreen gave us practically zero control while playing MC5: B, and often misread the location of our thumbs completely. In a first-person shooter, this lead to random shots fired in just about every direction but the targets:The second problem wasn't as extreme. While the iPhone 7 Plus does have stereo speakers, only the top one is front-facing. That's not a big deal for videos or music, but for gaming, it means that either your palm will muffle the audio, or you'd have to position your hand in such an uncomfortable position that extended play would be a literal pain. The over-sensitive screen meant plenty of ADs (accidental discharges). Image by Carib Guerra/Gadget Hacks That said, the iPhone 7 Plus killed it on the graphics front. Really. The scenes were vivid and the animation was seamless. So if you don't mind wearing headphones when you play, and you make sure to adjust the control sensitivity, the 7 Plus will serve you well. #3. Google Nexus 6P — Scores: 1,518 (3DMark) + 8.4/10 (Hands-On)Yes, it was released in 2015. Yes, it runs on the infamous Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, which caught a lot of flak for overheating when it was released (it felt fine to us). But this Google/Huawei mashup, last scion of the Nexus line, is still an solid phone. MC5:B on the Google Nexus 6P. Image by Carib Guerra/Gadget Hacks Huawei Nexus 6P Specs:Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 Adreno 430 GPU 3 GB RAM 5.7" AMOLED display 1,440 x 2,560 (518 ppi) Front-facing stereo speakers LiPo 3,450 mAh battery Android 7.0While it has a lower 3DMark score than the others in this list—and most modern flagships—it came in first place during our hands-on testing with a score of 8.4/10. For fans of mobile gaming, it would be hard to find a more well-rounded device than the Nexus 6P.The biggest issues we had with it were how sensitive the touchscreen was and how little resistance it offered. While those issues can be fixed in the settings, we found that it wasn't very hard to get used to after just a few minutes of play. With it's 5.7" AMOLED display (1,440 x 2,560, ~518 PPI) and front-facing stereo speakers, the games we tested look and sound great on the Nexus 6P. Graphics-wise, it didn't perform as well as some of the other devices—but it didn't stink—and the pros far outweighed the negligible cons in graphics. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks

The Other Devices TestedMobile gaming performance is a tricky thing to rate because of all the details that go into creating an ideal user experience. We tested eight very good phones that we chose based on their hardware specifications and other reviews around the web. Ultimately, not every phone can be a winner, and just because a phone isn't on this list doesn't mean it's not a great device—it just means that during our tests we found some issue(s) that led us to believe that it was not an ideal device for gaming.Surprisingly, gaming still doesn't seem to be top priority for many device manufacturers. Most of the phones we tested were quickly disqualified for design issues that just took too much away from the overall user experience. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge didn't make our list because the single speaker was placed in the worst-possible spot for holding a device two-handed in landscape mode. If you're somebody who prefers playing with headphones on, then you might find that the S7 Edge suits you just fine. However, in order to keep our tests fair across all devices and for all potential users, we judged each device on default settings and with no added peripherals (including headphones). Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks We based our hands-on scores using a first-person shooter, but found that the scores change little for other types of games. That doesn't mean there aren't other aspects to consider, though, so what do you look for in a gaming smartphone? Do you want top-of-the-line specs, or something that feels right for your style of gaming? How To: Add More Video Clips to iMovie Projects on Your iPhone

How To: Add More Video Clips to iMovie Projects on Your iPhone

Adding additional photos to a movie project in iMovie for iPhone is relatively simple, but incorporating more videos to your timeline is a little bit more involved, only because there's more that you can do. Unlike with photos, you can trim the length of new videos, select the audio only, and add overlay effects. You can add video clips to your movie project from your iPhone's built-in storage, iCloud Photo Library, iCloud Drive, or Files app, and you can always take new videos right away if you want. We'll cover these options below, but before that, make sure you have your movie project open and ready. If you don't have one yet, check out the basics in the link below for making one.More Info: How to Create a New iMovie Project on Your iPhone

Step 1: Select Where You Want to Add the VideoA new video can be added to any part of a movie project's timeline, then reorganized to the most appropriate spot afterward, but why not just add it to the right place when you import? Choosing the correct spot right off the bat means less work later. In your movie project, swipe left or right on the timeline to position the playhead (the white vertical line in the middle) to the spot where you want to add the new video clip. If the playhead is situated over a clip in your timeline and not in between clips, the video is added either before or after that clip, whichever is closer to the playhead's current position. If you choose an overlay effect later, it will start at the playhead's location and be on top of the original video track. When you're all set, tap the "+" sign on the left side to bring up the media browser.
Step 2: Select a New Video to ImportAs mentioned before, there are multiple places where you can find videos to import. You can get them from your Photos app or your Files app, the latter which includes iCloud Drive and third-party cloud storage apps if running iOS 11, iOS 12, or higher. You can also record a new video if you're editing in the moment.Alternatively, you could import videos into your project from iTunes, but it's the least convenient option and entirely unnecessary when you could AirDrop the files to your Photos app first. So we won't cover iTunes here.

Method 1: From the Photos AppLooking for a video that's stored on your iPhone or in your iCloud Photo Library? Then select either "Moments," "Videos," or "Albums" from the media browser. I recommend selecting "Videos" or an all-videos album since they will give you more detailed options for importing when you finally find the video you want to use. To preview in a folder with both photos and video, tap-and-hold on the video thumbnail. To play without holding, tap on it once, then tap the play button that appears. In an all-video album, tap on the video and hit the play button. You can also swipe your finger across the video to scrub through the frames. If you see a cloud icon in the top right of the video thumbnail, when you preview it, the quality might seem reduced since the video is not downloaded to your iPhone. The original quality will be maintained when importing.

Method 2: From the Files AppYour iCloud Drive lets you store files of any type into a central location that lives online. You can access and add to this online storage space from your Mac or any of your iOS devices, which makes it easy to share content from one device to another. In iMovie, you can import videos into your movie project right from the iCloud Drive, as well as other services in the Files app, as long as you're running iOS 11 or higher.Tap on "iCloud Drive" from the media browser to access your files. The import screen will appear with iCloud Drive opened to either the "Recents" or "Browse" tab. If the "Recents" tab is empty or doesn't have any of the videos you want, select the "Browse" tab instead. Unlike with pictures in the Photos app, you cannot enlarge thumbnails for previewing when in the iCloud Drive browser. If you'd rather use footage stored in one of your other cloud services that is connected to the Files app, tap on "Locations" from the iCloud Drive's "Browse" tab. If you're in landscape mode on a large screen iPhone, the Locations menu may already be on the left side. Supported third-party cloud services and apps include Adobe Creative Cloud, Adobe Scan, Baidu Cloud, Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, and Microsoft OneDrive, among others.Unfortunately, you can't preview or scrub through videos located anywhere within the any of the connected Files apps either. That's only possible from videos in your Photos app (the previous method).

Method 3: Take a New VideoWant a brand new video to include in your movie project's timeline? Then tap the "Camera" option from the media browser to open the viewfinder up. The video camera opens up by default, so you can start recording right away.To better match the videos in your timeline already, you can tap on the noted resolution/frame rate up top to change between options such as 720p (240 fps), 1080p (30 fps), 1080p (60 fps), 1440p (60 fps), and 4K (30 fps). Options will vary depending on what model iPhone you own. You can also turn on the flash if you'd like or go into selfie mode. If shooting a selfie, you won't get a flash or any options to change the shooting mode. When you're ready, tap the shutter button to start recording, then tap the stop button to quit recording. You can preview the video afterward, and if it's all good, choose "Use Video" to save the video to your Photos app and import into your timeline. You can also choose "Retake" to try again.

Step 3: Trim the Video (Optional)Before adding a video, you can trim the length right away instead of doing it afterward in your timeline. To do so, you must have used Method 1 above and only in an all-video album. You won't get the trim option any other way when importing. In an all-video album, highlight the clip you want, then drag the bold yellow borders on the left and right of it inward to where you want your start and stop points, respectively. As you drag your finger along the screen, a preview will show the frame for where you're currently at.

Step 4: Import the Video into Your TimelineIf you chose to use the "Camera" option to record a new video, you likely already added the video to your timeline. All you had to do was tap on "Use Video." If you chose a video from your iCloud Drive or Files, then tap on the video to import it into the timeline. For videos residing in your Photos app, tap on the video to bring up the import menu. To add the full or trimmed video, tap the "+" sign, and it will appear in your timeline where the playhead was. If it's a video from iCloud Photo Library (with the cloud icon), then it will download to your device first, then automatically import into the project.By default, video clips added to the timeline get a dissolve transition added to them on each side of the clip if it is in between two other clips. If they start or end the project, only one dissolve will be added for its connecting video. This effect can be changed later. Aside from importing the clip as is, you can also choose from the import menu to import just the video's audio or to import the video as an overlay effect on top of the original timeline. For any overlays added, the sound will automatically be muted (though you can unmute it later).

Tool 1: CutawayThe cutaway option (two rectangles the same size) lets you add the video directly on top of another video or group of videos in your timeline. So, effectively, the movie will cut away from the main timeline to this clip, then back to the main timeline.

Tool 2: Picture-in-PictureThe picture-in-picture option (a bold rectangle in the top left of a bigger rectangle) lets you overlay the video over the main video. It's just superimposed in a smaller window over the bigger video in your movie project.

Tool 3: Split ScreenThe split-screen option (a rectangle split in two) lets you put the selected video right beside the video already in the timeline, so they both play at the same time in an equal amount of space in the player. And you've just added another video to your movie project! Do this as many times as necessary to get all of the video clips that you want in the timeline. And don't forget that you can add photos too. This article was produced during Gadget Hacks' special coverage on smartphone-based video creator tips for filming and editing.
