How To: Control Your Mac Apps with Custom Trackpad Gestures
Remembering keyboards shortcuts can prove difficult, especially when there are so many to remember, not to mention that they differ from app to app. While tools like CheatSheet can make them easier to use, today I'm going to show you how to enter them without using your keyboard at all.Riverflow, from Katsuma Tanaka, makes using keyboard shortcuts, as well as opening URLs and apps or running scripts, easier by letting you set custom two-finger trackpad gestures to quickly perform actions on your Mac. This can be applied globally, in addition to the scroll and zoom options already built into OS X, or specifically for certain apps. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Step 1: Download & Install RiverflowYou can download Riverflow (Version 1.0.0) for free either from this direct link or their website on your Mac, although you'll need Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) or later for it to work.Unzip the file and move Riverflow to your Applications folder for safe keeping. Once you open it, you can cycle through a short tutorial that shows you how to set up and use the two-finger gestures. After that, you can begin creating your own.

Step 2: Add an App to ControlSelect the app's icon from the menu bar and select "Preferences" to get started, then go to the Gestures tab. You can initially choose to create gestures that work across your entire computer (Global) or in Finder. Note: If you create a gesture for Global, it will override any gestures you've made for any other individual apps. Add a new gesture with the plus sign at the bottom left, then choose to add any app on your computer. From my list of apps, I chose to add to gestures to Spotify in order to better control music playback.

Step 3: Assign GesturesOnce you have an app selected, hit the plus sign on the inside window to add a gesture for it. Click on the gesture icon to bring up all of the options (which require two fingers), including ones that swipe down and left or right, right angles, zig-zag, and create a circle. Once the gesture is selected, add a title to the shortcut, select the type of action (keyboard shortcut, open URL or file, or even run Apple or shell script) and enter the keyboard shortcut (or file or command) that you want to come about.

Step 4: Use GesturesFor Spotify, I created two-finger gestures for skipping a song, going back a song, and muting the song currently playing. In the second screenshot below, you can see the transparent window that appears in the middle of the screen when you successfully use a gesture. When you were unboxing your Galaxy Note7, you probably wondered why a little metal claw tool was included in the packaging. Then, if you looked closer, you saw there were five plastic sticks included with the claw tool that came in two different colors.Well, these pieces are actually quite essential, as the little sticks are S Pen replacement tips, and the metal claw is a tool for removing them. The two different colors indicate different hardness levels, which help if you use a plastic screen protector. Really, there's a lot to learn about replacing the nib on the end of your S Pen, so I'll cover the whole process in detail.Don't Miss: 5 Ways to Unleash Your Galaxy Note7's S Pen Superpowers

Step 1: Gather MaterialsTo get started, grab your S Pen, and take the removal tool out of its packaging. In the same plastic bag, you'll find the set of five replacement tips, so take those out as well.

Step 2: Choose the Right TipAs I mentioned earlier, the replacement tips come in two different colors—the darker ones are made out of softer plastic, and the lighter ones are harder. If you installed a plastic screen protector, the softer tips will prevent your S Pen from scratching the flimsy plastic over your screen. However, these tips have more friction to them, so they will leave marks on regular glass.So bottom line, use the darker and softer tips if you have a plastic screen protector. If you use a tempered glass screen protector, or no screen protector at all, the lighter and harder tips are the ones to use. Use the softer tips for plastic screen protectors. Otherwise, use the harder tips.

Step 3: Remove the Old TipNow that you know which tip to use, grab the S Pen tip removal tool, and look at the point where the claws come together. You'll see a little notch here—this is where you should grab the tip of your S Pen to remove the old nib. So grip the tip firmly with the removal tool, then pull back with steady and even pressure. The tip should pop loose with minimal effort, and once it does, you can remove it the rest of the way by hand.

Step 4: Install the New TipNext up, grab the replacement tip, and make sure the pointy side is facing away from your S Pen. From here, just slide the replacement tip into your S Pen until you feel a tiny bit of resistance. Once the tip is most of the way in, just press firmly with your finger to lock it into place. There won't be any satisfying "click" when it's done, but it only takes a small amount of pressure to lock it in place. When you're done, the new S Pen tip should only protrude about an eighth of an inch, so if yours looks like the picture below, you're all set to go. S Pen tips wear down over time, so this is something you'll have to do once every year or so. Trust can be a touchy subject in general, and is often required when sharing personal information—especially so when handing our phones over to others. You may not have a ton of secret or nefarious information on your device, but that doesn't mean you want your mom or snoopy coworker having easy access to your messages or Facebook app.Locking applications can help, but then you're left explaining to someone why your Gmail or Instagram apps are locked, and if it's a significant other, well, now you've got some explaining to do.Instead of locking apps, simply hide them so the conversation never takes place. The best way I've found to do that is by hiding them in an innocent-looking app, and what could be more innocent than a calculator? Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Note that the hiding function is accomplished by "freezing" apps, which essentially removes them from your visible app list while not actually removing them from your device. The process of freezing requires deep system access, and for that reason, your Android device must be rooted.

Step 1: Install Smart Hide CalculatorDeveloper Inderdeep Singh, known as IDSstudio in the Android world, created a fully functional calculator that's really an app hider called Smart Hide Calculator, which can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store.

Step 2: Set Your PasscodeThe first time you open Smart Hide Calculator, you'll notice it says Set Password up top. Enter a passcode, then hit the equals sign (=) and confirm it. After setting your passcode, you'll be prompted to create a backup code, just in case.
Forgot Your Passcode?If you ever forget your passcode, enter the password recovery mode by entering 123456789+987654321 in the calculator, followed by the equals sign (=).

Step 3: Start Hiding AppsTo hide apps, just select the Freeze Apps option, then select apps from a list of the ones you have installed. They will disappear from your app drawer and appear as if they're no longer installed. Be aware that any locked-apps will still show as shortcuts on your home screen, although they will not be accessible (showing an "App Not Installed" message). Many others are optimized for multiple languages, space saving, or emojis, but none are without their flaws.With this in mind, developer Eun created an Xposed module that will let you choose different keyboards to use with each of the apps you have installed.So if you're multilingual, for instance, you can use a Spanish-optimized keyboard with WhatsApp, then use an English-optimized keyboard with your SMS app. Or perhaps you'd rather use Fleksy while posting on your favorite Reddit app, but automatically switch to an emoji-heavy keyboard when you're using Hangouts. From there, tap the "Select Input Method" notification and choose the keyboard you'd like to use for this particular app. From now on, the keyboard you just selected will open every time you use this particular app. All other apps will still use your system default keyboard, but you can set any app to have its own keyboard in this same manner. The module will ensure that your keyboard and app combinations are remembered.
