Hot or Not: The Original Ego Scaler Is Now on Android, iOS, & Windows

Hot or Not: The Original Ego Scaler Is Now on Android, iOS, & Windows

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all? Besides being one of the most notorious misquotes of all time (the line is "Magic Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all"), it's a question that men and women probably have asked themselves more than once."Am I hot or not?"Hot or Not was a huge success during my adolescence as I spent a good amount of time clicking through pictures of random women from all over the country. But in this mobile-obsessed world, apps like Tinder and dating sites like Match or eHarmony have taken over what used to be Hot or Not's exclusive territory. Unlike that chick in high school who was really hot but let herself go during college, Hot or Not has stepped up its game and is looking to compete with the trove of copycat services. The original premise remains unchanged—rating others based on "hotness"—only this time, you are matched with people that rate you as Hot if you rated them the same. When a match is made, you can carry out a text conversation through the app, then eventually get married and all that good stuff.Hot or Not's website and mobile apps have recently been updated, so I decided to give the app a whirl on my Samsung Galaxy S5. You can, too: download it in the Google Play Store, the iOS App Store, or the Windows Store.

Setting Up Your ProfileOnce you have download the app, the setup is pretty basic. Similar to other apps like Tinder or Hinge, you can create a profile using your Facebook account. Yeah, I know, you don't want everybody in the world to know that you're using Hot or Not, but don't worry, they don't post anything to your profile and only other people using the app can find you. You can also use Google to sign up, but the preferred method is Facebook so you can see mutual friends and easily upload profile photos.

Adding Your PhotosSince the app pulls random photos from your Facebook profile, you're going to want to swap those out for pictures that you know will get that Hot connection.Tap the menu button in the top left corner and access your profile, then tap on the camera icon and select where you wish to add photos from. Select the photos that you want to appear when people view your profile by tapping "Add Selected"—just make sure to select at least four photos, otherwise you'll be locked out of seeing photos from other people, accompanied by the following: This is simply to prevent people from creeping on other folks without giving up a little something on their end as well.

Editing Your ProfileWe know you're more than just a pretty face, so edit your profile to add details about yourself. Tap the menu button in the top left and select your profile, then tap on the small profile icon to make edits. Here is where you can add information about yourself as well as add or edit to your interests pulled from Facebook.

Start the Rating GameWith your profile all set, it's finally time to get down to business—when you come across someone, either Heart (Hot) or X (Not) them. To view more photos, swipe to the left, or check out their profile by tapping the icon to the left of the Heart. The mainstay of Hot or Not has always been the score, and that's where egos are elevated and shattered. While negative reactions to your profile are anonymous on most other apps like this, Hot or Not gives it to you straight. The higher your number, the more people find you "Hot," the lower your number...well, you know. You can check out your score at any time in the menu section by selecting Score. This is also where your Connections, the conversations between your matches, reside.

Filters & SearchIf you aren't finding enough "Hot," or keep finding profiles that don't fall into your age range (if you're not the "cougar" type), then you can adjust your filter settings.Select the filter icon (the one that looks like a funnel) to change your criteria, where you can choose between Guys and Girls, as well as adjust your preferred age range. You can also search for friends, famous people, and the like with the Search function. This makes it easy to find someone that you are already interested in, instead of hoping to randomly stumble across their profile.

Tinder vs. Hot or NotEven though Tinder is a blatant Hot or Not remake, it is by far the more popular application. Thanks to a heavy adoption, the likelihood of matching with people and finding people around you is much higher than you will find on Hot or Not.However, Hot or Not does have the Score system, a Search function, and "Local Hot List." Having the ability to search for people you already know and find attractive would be a nice addition to Tinder. Plus the Local Hot List makes it easy to find the most highly rated people around you, giving you the cream of the crop with just a tap. However, you do need to have at least 100 people also rate you as Hot to gain access to the list—it's a VIP section of sorts. With these additional features, Hot or Not stands a fighting chance in the ever-growing mobile app hook-up arena. Oh, and if you see my profile, I'm expecting that Heart button to be tapped...I need to break into that Local Hot List.Share your thoughts on Hot or Not with us in the comment section below, and as always, hit us up on Facebook and Twitter.

How To: Get Back Lock Screen Customization in Android Lollipop

How To: Get Back Lock Screen Customization in Android Lollipop
Beginning with KitKat, I've been used to customizing every aspect of my Android phone, but with the release of Lollipop, there is quite a bit of catching up that developers need to do. Most customization features, like quick settings rearrangement and theme support have already been ported over, but any type of lock screen customization has been noticeably absent. As I was searching for a way to get some level of customization back, I stumbled across Hi Locker by AppPlus Mobi, creators of Lockdown Pro. Their replacement lock screen does everything that the stock Android one does, with the addition of app shortcuts, wallpaper customization, and the ability to add personal slogans underneath the clock. While I do love the look and feel of this lock screen, it does lack proper playback controls for media, which can be a deal breaker for music lovers. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install Hi LockerIn the Play Store app, go ahead and install Hi Locker for free. Even though it changes an integral part of your OS, it does not require root permissions. If you want to support development and remove ads, you can upgrade to the Pro version via an in-app purchase of $1.41.

Step 2: Make Hi Locker Your Lock ScreenThe first time you open the Hi Locker app, you'll need to go through a few steps to allow it to replace the default lock screen. After you have entered your name, set your system security to "None," then grant notification access to Hi Locker and you'll be ready to go.

Step 3: Configure Your New Lock ScreenNow that Hi Locker has successfully replaced your default lock screen, you can begin customizing it! All of the settings for Hi Locker are held within the app, not in the normal Security section of the stock Settings app.

Choose a WallpaperWallpaper customization works exactly like it does for your home screen. Tap on "Wallpapers" from Hi Locker's main menu and select either one of the default offerings or select an image from your internal storage. You can also add a blur effect to the wallpaper by going to "More" on the main menu and enabling "Blur wallpaper."

Set Up SecurityUnlike most third-party lock screen apps, Hi Locker supports pattern and PIN security, which can be enabled from the "Security" section. And for an even more secure password, you can enable "Invisible Mode," which prevents your pattern from being visible when you enter it.If you do decide to add a security, you can also add trusted Wi-Fi access points, which will disable security when you are connected to them. And if you are paranoid about people messing with your notifications while your screen is locked, you can hide notification previews and disable the notification pulldown from your lock screen.

Add App ShortcutsEven though the Lollipop lock screen comes with Phone and Camera shortcuts built-in, more is always better. To add app shortcuts, tap the "Shortcut" option and drag the slider at the bottom of the screen to a target circle (just be sure to set one aside for the unlock function).

Adjust Clock & Weather WidgetsThe time and date widget that appears at the top of your screen can also be customized. Tap "Clock Style" and scroll through a few different font and layout options. There are also a few versions that come with weather forecasts built-in. Once you find a layout you like, tap "Apply" for the changes to take effect. To change the weather units and update frequency, go to the "Weather" section.

Add a Custom Lock Screen MessageFinally, you can add custom messages to your lock screen. While you can add inspirational messages to keep you going throughout the day, I would suggest adding some owner info to make it easier for someone to get your phone back to you if it is ever lost. Hopefully the developers add the ability to fully control your music like the default lock screen, but if you can look past that shortcoming, Hi Locker is a great replacement. Let us know how you liked Hi Locker in the comment section below, and make sure to follow Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter for more Android guides.

How To: Turn Apps into Home Screen Pages on Android
There's a never-ending selection of app launchers that want a permanent spot on your Android device. While some keep the stock-Android look with beefed-up versions of Google's launcher, Blur is relatively new on the scene, with a unique approach to app management that sets it apart.Made by Klinker Apps, the same group that brought us EvolveSMS, which was covered in my desktop-to-SMS guide, and the popular Talon for Twitter, Blur gives your apps their own Google Now-style info page. What this means is, you can swipe left to see a page for weather and your daily agenda, and swipe again to go straight into your text messages. Being able to have separate pages for texts and Twitter in full view is certainly more convenient than launching each app individually. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Download & Install BlurBegin by installing Blur - A Launcher Replacement from the Google Play Store (it's free).

Step 2: Install EvolveSMS for a Text Messaging Info PageIn order for Blur to show you all of your text message conversations in a home screen page, you'll need to also install EvolveSMS. For more info on using EvolveSMS as your text messaging client, see my other guide.

Step 3: Install Blur - Unread for Notification Counts (Optional)Before you dive into the Blur launcher, you'll also want to install Blur - Unread (Experimental). This add-on will allow Blur to show unread counts for apps. You can skip this step if you want, but I find this to be incredibly useful for glancing to see which apps have pending notifications. After it is installed, launch Blur - Unread. It'll prompt you to enable notification listening, so check its corresponding box. Once that's enabled, add EvolveSMS, Phone, and Calendar for showing unread counts.
Step 4: Install Talon for Twitter (Optional)You're almost done getting everything we need for Blur. If you regularly use Twitter, install Talon for Twitter. It does cost $1.99, but I highly recommend it if you want a Twitter feed to be integrated into a home screen app page.In addition to Talon, you'll also need to Talon (Blur Launcher Page) for Twitter integration.

Step 5: Customize Blur & Its App PagesNow that you have everything you need, launch Blur, and if it prompts you to, set it as the default launcher. Blur will show its quick start guide on the first launch, but you can quickly dismiss it.Now, swipe right to bring up the Blur app page to begin customizing the launcher. Tap the Settings icon to begin, and under Page Settings, select Page Picker to add app pages. In Page Picker, tap the add icon to add Blur Info. I recommend adding EvolveSMS for Page 2 and Talon for Twitter for Page 3. When complete, tap the checkmark icon to finish adding your pages. Then, navigate back to Page Settings and tap Card Picker. Tap Create Card and add all three cards: Weather, Calendar, and Alarm. Again, tap the checkmark box to finish configuring. In the main settings page, hit the 3-dot menu button and select Experimental Settings. From here, you can enable "OK Google" hotword detection and Unread Badges (as long as the app from Step 3 is installed). Under Display Settings in the main menu, you can customize your app grid sizes, apply app icons, change icon sizes, and also the dock. Here's a quick overview of each option:
WorkspaceTap Workspace to change both your home screen and app launcher grid size. You can also add padding to the grids if you want more space in-between app icons. If you rather have your apps shown in landscape instead of portrait, you can configure it here as well.
VisualsIn Visuals, you can set your desired icon pack if you have one downloaded. You can also change icon sizing and scaling here. Anything from scrolling effects, app style, and font type are also configurable.
DockIn Dock, there are settings for showing or hiding the app dock, icon size and scaling, and also configuring the amount of items shown.

Step 6: Blur Up & Running! Now that we have it all set up, it's time to enjoy it. Here are a few screenshots of Blur up and running and fully configured on my Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Below is the Weather, Calendar, and Alarm page. (1) Main screen. (2) Swiping over... (3) ...Blur Info page. And I have the second page assigned to EvolveSMS for my messaging. (1) Swipe over. (2) Messaging page. Blur's still new to the game, but as developers add support for Blur, expect to see more dedicated app pages that will make for quick access. Right now, I really like being able to just swipe and easily see all my messages. Definitely keep an eye out for Blur if you like these nifty app pages.Tell us in the comments below how you're liking Blur and if you have any questions setting it all up.

How To: How Dropbox Could Help You Find Your Lost or Stolen Smartphone

How To: How Dropbox Could Help You Find Your Lost or Stolen Smartphone

I had my wallet stolen a few months ago, and I knew I would never see it again. My biggest gripe was not the credit cards in there, since they're easily cancelled, but the gift cards. I had some pretty good gift cards in there, and there's no way to get those back.Your wallet is probably the one of the most frustrating things you can ever lose, but one item that might top it is your cell phone. My phone not only costs more than my wallet, but has just as much information—if not more—about me on it. Banking apps, contacts, my home address, Facebook login, etc. And then, of course, there's my Yahoo! Fantasy Basketball app (I'm currently in first place, suckers). Image via frontpagejunky.com Now, unlike your wallet, there are many ways to safeguard your expensive iPhone or Android device, if it ever comes up missing or stolen, even if it's on silent. There are also several ways to make your iPhone really difficult to unlock so that even if someone does grab it, it won't do them much good. But here is one method I'm sure you haven't thought of.

How to Use Dropbox to Find Your Stolen PhoneRedditor cwumed explains that if Dropbox is installed and set up correctly, any picture the thief takes will automatically be uploaded to your Dropbox account for your viewing pleasure. This way, you can get photo evidence of the thief and perhaps even decipher the location. Images via apple.com Of course, someone who has stolen your phone will most likely delete everything you have installed. But, if you're using an Android device, you can root your device and install a hidden .zip version of Dropbox deep down in the device, which would go unnoticed by most common thieves. You can probably also get away with doing this on an un-rooted device by unlocking the bootloader and flashing Dropbox to the system level, giving it root access. But, if a thief actually knew what he/she was doing, they could simply boot to recovery mode, format /system, and flash a new ROM onto the device. Or, they can hack into your Dropbox account to uninstall it via the website. Is this Dropbox hack the most efficient anti-theft method? Of course not. Especially if you have an iPhone (like me). But, if combined with a few of the other apps and methods available, this can only increase your chances of recovering of your phone. If it's your laptop at risk, you can do some amateur sleuthing and try Backblaze, Google Street View, and Craigslist to catch the thieves, like Make did.

How To: Personalize Your Snapchat Stories with Drawings, Emoji, GIFs & More

How To: Personalize Your Snapchat Stories with Drawings, Emoji, GIFs & More
Snapchat is one of the best ways for people to communicate with pictures, but it has a ton of other features baked into it. From the Memories feature to My Story, there are many ways to save save and share snaps among friends. Sometimes though, you want to add a little more pizzaz to your snaps. Luckily, Snapchat gives users a myriad of ways to interact with snaps before they're sent. One such way of editing snaps is by drawing on them. This isn't just for the artists, though. Even those who majored in drawing stick figures can easily integrate a few illustrations into their snaps to add a little oomph to them. Even if you fail, you'll still likely illicit some positive responses from you friends.

Step 1: Take a SnapYour first step (as always) is taking a snap. Open up the app, then tap the white circle in the center on the bottom when you're ready to take the shot.

Step 2: Draw on Your SnapTo draw on your snap, tap on the pencil icon that lives on the right side in the screen that appears after you take a snap. A color palette will appear on the right, indicating the color that'll show up when you draw. Tap and hold the ball on the palette, and it'll magnify. This is so you can clearly see what color you'll be using to draw. Drag it up and down to see all the colors that Snapchat has to offer, and lift your finger when you're satisfied with one. The selected color will have a white circle around it. Now, drag your finger along the snap to draw on it. To undo an action, tap the back arrow in the top-right corner next to the pencil icon. If you're satisfied with your artistic creation, tap the pencil icon in the top-right corner to finish drawing.

Step 3: Sprinkle Some Emojis on Your SnapsYou can even add some emojis from the drawing menu if you'd like. Go back to the draw screen (by tapping the pencil icon), and tap the blue heart emoji. Similar to the palette of colors that unfurled in Step 2, a bunch of emojis will pop up. You can either tap an emoji to select it, or slide your finger along the emojis like in Step 2 to preview them. The selected emoji will have a white circle around it. If you slide below the leaf emoji, a secret stash of emojis will pop up — they're the ones that you've used as stickers in the past. Tap on the screen to add the emoji to your snap. By using a pinching motion, you can resize it. If you drag your finger along the screen, it'll create a trail of emoji's, which is pretty neat. To go back to drawing, tap on the color wheel in the top-right corner. To undo, tap on the undo icon in the top-right corner. And to save everything, tap the pencil in the top- right.

Step 4: Add GIFs to Your SnapsNext, you might want to add even more flair to your Snap by tossing in a GIF or two. Now, Snapchat lets you add animated GIFs from Giphy directly to your snaps, and it works almost the same way as adding a sticker. It's pretty simple, but check out our full guide on adding GIFs below.More Info: How to Add GIFs from Giphy to Your Snaps

Step 5: Send Your Snap OutOnce you're ready, send out your snap by tapping the send icon in the bottom-right corner. Choose who you want to ship it out to, then hit the send icon in the bottom-right corner. What have you drawn onto your snaps? What do your friends think of your artistic abilities? How To: Clear All Items from Your Nexus 5's Overview Screen in Just One Tap

How To: Clear All Items from Your Nexus 5's Overview Screen in Just One Tap
Android 5.0 brought a lot of changes to the world's most popular mobile OS, but few were more central to the user experience than tweaks made to the "Overview" menu (more commonly known as the "Recent Apps" menu). Aside from a visual overhaul, Chrome tabs now exist as separate entries in this list, as do Google searches and a few other activities. This was all done in the name of productivity, but in reality, another change has made Android multitasking into a cumbersome experience for many users. All of these new entries, as well as the traditional elements, get carried over through a reboot—meaning every tab, search, and app you've ever launched since updating to Lollipop stays in the list until you manually swipe them away.In an effort to help make this cluttered UI more manageable, developer Gar Ynych has created a mod that will add a "Clear All" button to your Recent Apps menu. With this one installed, maintaining a tidy multitasking view should be even easier than it was before Lollipop came along. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
RequirementsRooted Nexus 5 running Android 5.0.1 Custom recovery installed

Step 1: Download the Flashable ZIPTo begin, point your Nexus 5's web browser to this link. The flashable ZIP will begin downloading immediately, but wait until it has finished before moving on to the next step.

Step 2: Boot into Custom RecoveryThe next step is to boot into your custom recovery. From a powered-off state, press and hold the volume down and power buttons simultaneously. When Android's bootloader menu comes up, press the volume down button twice to highlight "Recovery mode," then press the power button to select it.

Step 3: Install the ModBefore you flash this one, it would be a good idea to make a NANDroid backup. If anything goes wrong, or you decide you'd like to undo this mod, the easiest way to get things back to normal would be to restore that backup. That said, start by tapping the "Install" button. From here, navigate to your device's Download folder, then select the "ClearAllRecentsButton_501.zip" file. From here, just swipe the slider at the bottom of the screen to install the mod. When that's finished, tap "Reboot System." When you get back up, you'll find the new button in the top-right corner of your Recent Apps menu. Just tap it and all of the entries will be cleared away.
