Myth Debunked: Uncooked Rice Isn't the Best Way to Save Your Water-Damaged Phone
If you drop your smartphone in water, take it apart as much as you can and place it in rice. It's been the most recommended method of cell phone rescue since the days of clamshells. In fact, it's usually the only thing recommended when searching for "how to save your wet phone." Turns out, we've been wrong all along.Gazelle, the company best known for buying people's used electronic devices, performed a series of tests to determine the best ways to prevent damage to phones dropped in water.

The Sponge TestPre-weighed sponges soaked with water (and then weighed again) were used in this experiment. Gazelle placed them into sealed plastic containers with 100 grams each of six different drying agents. There was also a wet sponge left out in open air, and one sealed in a container by itself. Image via Gazelle Each sponge was placed on top of wax paper, to prevent direct contact with the drying agents, since in a smartphone, there is normally no direct contact with the drying agent.
Uncooked White Rice Ain't Cutting ItAfter 24 hours, the sponges were weighed again to see how much weight had been lost. And would you believe itâ€”according to the results, uncooked white rice placed dead last in effectiveness as a drying agent. Here's the list, from best to worst.Open-air sponge - 7.6 mL lost Silica gel - 6.1 mL lost Cat litter - 5.5 mL lost Instant couscous - 5.0 mL lost Instant rice - 5.0 mL lost Instant oatmeal - 5.0 mL lost Uncooked white rice - 4.0 mL lost Sealed-container sponge - 0.7 mL lost Cat litter, instant couscous, instant rice, and instant oatmeal all performed better than uncooked white riceâ€”everyone's favorite damn drying agent.

The Cell Phone TestThe second experiment they performed was similar, using a few iPhones and Samsung Galaxy S3 devices. Using the same drying agents as above, it was also shown that uncooked white rice was the biggest loser. The results of Gazelle's test with phones submerged in water and "dried" with household items.

Instant Couscous/Rice Is More PourousSo why did drying agents such as instant couscous and instant rice perform better than uncooked white rice?On Twitter, Gazelle explained that both of these instant products are steamed, which cracked starch. Starch, already known for its absorbent nature, becomes more porous thus taking in more water than usual. Rice on the other hand is a grain, which has not been ground up, so it still has its layers from being a seed. As a seed, it can only absorb a limited amount of water for it to grow into a plant. If it absorbed as much as something like pasta (which contains lots of starch), it would dissolve and become useless as a seed.
Silica Gel vs. Open AirWhile instant couscous and instant rice work better than uncooked white rice, silica gel works the best out of all drying agents that Gazelle tested.But while silica gel performed well, the sponge left out in the open (71Â°F; relative humidity of 40%) lost the most amount of water in the tests. With this information, should you leave your phone out in the open or place it in silica gel?Since there is a wide range in performance for each drying agent, choosing one or the other could have a direct impact on the recovery of your smartphone, whether it be positive or negative. If a drying agent cannot absorb moisture quickly enough, the air that's trapped in the container or ziplock bag will become humid and slow down evaporation.Since there is not enough information (as of yet), a fortified statement of whether or not air or silica gel works better cannot be made. Factors such as amount of drying agent, brand of drying agent, type of smartphone, time of day, and more all play a role in how each performs.Although the open-air method lost the most water, according to Gazelle, this does not mean that a drying agent cannot outperform open air under certain circumstances. Increasing the amount of drying agent could help dry out the smartphone better.
So, What You Should You Do Then?Well, let's take it step by step for you.

Step 1: Dry Your Phone with Paper Towels, VacuumBefore even trying to dump your phone into a drying agent, the first step you should perform is to turn off your smartphone or take out the battery. Dry the outside and use something like a vacuum (waterproof) in order to extract any water stuck on the inside. You might not get all of it, but you should try and get the most you can out of there.

Step 2: Open Your Phone UpIn order for air circulation to do its job, take off the back cover and battery out of your smartphone. Furthermore, you can use a Phillips screwdriver in order to take apart most Android smartphones. If you have an iPhone, you can purchase a pentalobe screwdriver for under $5 online. Once it's open, leave it out for a bit and let it dry in the open air. Image via iPhonizate Note: Taking apart your phones may void your warranty, but then again, so will dropping it in water.

Step 3: Use a Drying AgentFinally, after getting rid of as much water possible from the inside of your device, using a drying agent may help. If you decide to use a drying agent, don't use uncooked white rice. Instead, go with silica gelâ€”the best performing agent of the ones used in the Gazelle experiment. Image via Gazelle If you don't have any silica gel laying around, use instant couscous or instant rice as an alternative. While cat litter works better than the two previous mentioned drying agents, some of the particles from the litter could possibly enter your device, so use it carefully.

Several established apps have received updates a few months ago that contained an unwanted add-on called either DU Quick Charge, DU Battery Boost, DU Boost Charge, DU Speed Charge, DU Speed Booster, or another name starting with DU.It's not particularly malicious, but these DU add-ons take over your lock screen to display ads while your device is charging. And to make matters worse, the malware is hidden within other apps, so it can be hard to find the true source of the problem.Ultimately, this comes as a result of several app developers wanting to cash in on some extra ad revenue by including DU services with their apps. And since Google hasn't made any effort to block any of these developers from their app store, the only solution is to manually uninstall the apps that have caused the issue.

You send out a lot of emails, but probably get very few responses. How can you be sure those emails are even opened?With a Gmail plugin called Boomerang, you can find out what sent emails are never opened, and you can even keep track of the received emails in your inbox that are awaiting your response using a small Google Apps script.If you haven't already, it's time to step up your Gmail game. In fact, if emailing has any weight in your career, I would consider this absolutely essential, along with canned responses and non-traditional aliases.
How to Find Out Who's Not Reading Your EmailsBoomerang is a powerful Gmail browser extension for Safari, Firefox, and Chrome that's primarily used to schedules emails for future sending. However, it does something else, something even more impressiveâ€”it lets you know if an email was unopened (i.e. unread) within a given time frame.

Step 1: Install BoomerangInstalling it is simple. On the installation page, click on Install Now and it will auto-detect your browser for installation. Proceed from there. Hit "Install Now" when prompted. Although the Boomerang add-on should be automatically enabled, view your browser's extensions, just to make sure. Access the extensions through the following means:Chrome: Windows -> Extensions Firefox: Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions Safari: Safari -> Preferences -> Extensions "Boomerang for Gmail 1.2.1" is enabled in Firefox.

Step 2: Compose a Message & Boomerang ItNow let's see Boomerang in action. Restart your browser and login to Gmail. When you go to compose a new email, you'll notice a new bar at the bottom where you schedule your message. The new Boomerang bar in Compose mode. Tick Boomerang this and change if no reply to if not opened. Check "Boomerang"; Change "if no reply" to "if not opened". Now you will have the option of "boomeranging" your email back to you in a given amount of time if it is never opened. To set that amount of time, click the box after Boomerang this and select a date up to the exact minute. Select your boomerang date/time.

Step 3: Keep Track of Unopened MessagesAll of your unopened messaged will be sent back into a folder called "Boomerang." If you'd like, edit the name of this folder by clicking the down arrow next to the "Boomerang" folder, hit Edit, and change it to "Unopened" or something similar. [1] Click on the arrow and [2] edit the folder name. Now, there is a catch. All features of Boomerang are free in a 30-day trial, but afterward, the basic version will only let you boomerang 10 emails per month. You can upgrade if you need more.
How to Find Important Emails You Need to Respond ToBoomerang is great, but now how do you determine if you've actually responded to an important email or not? If you send out a lot of emails and expect responses, an unanswered email can go easily unnoticed.Alex Moore of Baydin, the company behind Boomerang, showed off a script on the Google Apps Developer Blog that will find unanswered emails in your Gmail inbox. With this script, you can automatically tag all of the emails in your inbox that haven't been responded to and place them in an "Awaiting Response" folder.

Step 1: Add Google Apps Script to Your DriveTo run the script, you will need to create your own Google application through the script editor. Sounds intense, I know, but don't worryâ€”you need absolutely zero developer knowledge to do this.In your Google Drive, click the red Create box, and select Connect more apps at the bottom of the drop-down box. Select "Connect more apps" from the menu. Search for "Script" and click the blue + Connect box next to Google Apps Script to activate it. Hit the "+ Connect" button next to Google Apps Script. Congratulations! Google Apps Script has now been added to your Google Drive. Success! You'll now see "Script" in the menu.

Step 2: Create a Blank ProjectIt's time to use the Google Apps Script to create your automated "Awaiting Response" tags. Go to your drive, click Create, and select Script. You will need to start a Blank Project. Select the "Blank Project" option.

Step 3: Insert the ScriptUpon creating a blank document, you will see "Untitled" in the upper left corner, and the start of a function where your script will go. Change the name "Untitled" to "Awaiting Response," and delete the function in the script editor. [1] Change the name and [2] delete the function area. Finally, you need to insert the script, which you can copy and paste from here, here, or here. That last link also has a time function that only searches the last 7 days and excludes multi-message threads.Once you paste it in the Google Apps Script, look for the line with "LastSentMessage." This is the actual tag you'll see on your emails. Change the words to whatever you like, but "Awaiting Response" is a good choice. If you used the third link above, it's already been changed. Make sure the label is named what you want.

Step 4: Run the ScriptTo finally get the script running, you'll need to click the small play button in the toolbar above the editor. Run the script with the play button. However, before running, the app will ask for access to your Gmail account, so make sure to Accept to get it up and running. "Accept" to continue. For reasons I can't quite figure out, your first attempt at running the script will return an error saying "Script function not found." Simply click Dismiss and run it again if it happens to youâ€”it should work the second time. A possible error you could receive; just hit "Dismiss" and try again.

Step 5: Automate the ScriptWhy would you want to log into Google Apps Script and run this every day? It defeats the purpose of convenience. Instead, automate the script by clicking on the clock icon in the toolbar and setting it to run daily, weekly, monthly, or whatever you fancy. Hit the clock icon, then select your intervals.

Step 6: Look for the "Awaiting Response" TagsAfter the script has run, every email without a response will be tagged and sent to a folder titled "Awaiting Response" (or whatever you chose). Your new label created! And that's all there is to it. Now you're getting notifications for when important emails you send are not opened, and a folder full of possibly important incoming emails that you need to respond to.

This choice can lead to a contacts list populated with entries that don't have a phone number, which can quickly add up. To mitigate this problem, there are a few methods.Previous versions of Android used to include an option in the Google-developed Contacts app to only show contacts with phone numbers, but this was removed in Android 5.0 Lollipop. Because of this decision, you'll need a workaround to accomplish this now. Fortunately, our first method is simple to perform and is accessible to most Android users.

Method 1: Set Your OEM Contacts App to Only Show Phone NumbersWhile the Google-developed Contacts app can't hide phone number-less contacts without a workaround, many OEM replacement apps do. Since only a handful of devices run stock Android, there is a good chance your device has one of these alternatives preinstalled. These apps tend to include an option to assist specifically with contacts without phone numbers. Here are just a few examples.Samsung ExperienceFor those using a Samsung device, you can find the option using the Phone app. Select the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner of your display and choose "Settings." Here is where you can enable the "Hide contacts without numbers" option. Oxygen OSFor OnePlus users, this option is pretty straightforward to find. Open your Contacts app and select the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner of your display. Choose "Settings" then enable "Only show contacts with number." LG UXFor LG devices, it requires a few more steps. Open the Phone app and select the Contacts tab. Select the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner of your display and choose "Contacts settings." Select "Display" and then enable "Show contact with phone numbers only."

Method 2: Use a Third-Party AppThere are some apps which include the ability to hide contacts with phone numbers. One of the cleanest choices we found was Contacts, Dialer, Phone & Call block by Simpler. This free app offers an experience similar to Google Phone, but it's a bit more customizable.Install Contacts, Dialer, Phone & Call block by Simpler from the Play Store After installing the app and going through the signup process, select "More" located in the bottom-right corner of your screen. Choose the "Settings" option, then "Contact List," to find a checkbox for "Show only contacts with phones." This app, like many contacts replacement app,s includes several tools outside just the ability to store and retain your address book. One such tool is the dialer. Depending on how you feel, you might wish to use the default app dialer that came with your phone.To accomplish this, navigate to the phone's Settings menu and select "Apps." Depending on the skin, locate "Default Apps" which will be either on the main "Apps" page or in the sub-menu which you access using the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner of your display. Select "Calling App" (or "Phone App") and choose the dialer app you wish to use.

Method 3: Create a Phone Number-Only LabelFor those of us who use a stock Android device and prefer not to use a third-party app, there is a workaround which you can use to accomplish this task within the default phone app. Open Google Contacts, select the hamburger menu in the upper-left corner, and choose "Create label."Type "Phone Numbers Only" (although you can use whatever label you want) and select "OK." On the new page, select "Add contacts" and choose each saved contact that has a phone number (use the person-shaped icon in the upper-right corner of your display to continue to add contacts).Once you finish adding each contact, select the back button to return to the main page. Select the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner and choose "Customize view."Select "Customize," and on the next page, uncheck every check box except for the "Phone Numbers Only" (or whatever you decided to label the new group). Choose "Save" in the upper-right corner, which will return to the main page with only the contacts you just added. No longer do you need to scroll through an unnecessarily long list of contacts populated with saved entries that you can't call. Using any one of our methods, you can clean up your phone's contacts. With this guide, I'm going to focus on the right format you need for your eBook, how to convert to proper formats, and finally, how to transfer them over to your Kindle Fire HDX.
Step 1: Knowing the Proper File Formats for KindleBefore you start adding eBooks to your Kindle Fire, you'll need to know the proper formats for eBook files in order to be successful.
Supported Kindle Books FormatsAs of now, the currently supported formats for Kindle books are:AZW KF8 MOBI PRC If you can find eBooks with the AZW format, that's great, because that's the proprietary Kindle format. KF8 is a brand new Kindle format, so you won't find many out there on the Internet, but they'll work just as well. Finally MOBI and PRC are formats used by the MobiPocket Reader, but many third-party readers can render these files, including the Kindle Fire HDX.
Supported Text File FormatsAnd the Kindle Fire HDX supports the following Text files:TXT PDF DOC DOCX Formats for Text are for supported "personal" documents. While you can use these formats to read and open books (PDF especially), you won't be able to read them under the Books tab like you would with Kindle books.
The Most Common Unsupported FormatNow that working formats have been covered, it's important to note that the majority of eBooks online are in the ePub format. It is supported by the largest number of eReadersâ€”more than any other formatâ€”but the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX does not support this type of file.Fret not, you can still read an ePub book on your Kindle Fire HDX using a program like Calibre to convert it to the proper format.

Step 2: Converting ePub Books to a Supported FormatTo convert an ePub book to a supported format, you'll need to download Calibre (don't worry, it's free) onto your computer. In this tutorial, I'll be performing the conversions in Mac OS X Mavericks.Once you download Calibre, go through the short setup which includes selecting a folder for your downloads, choosing your eReader device (Kindle Fire HD in this case), and the option of entering the email associated with your Amazon account (in order to receive converted eBooks via email directly to your Kindle).Now that you're ready to convert, click on Add books -> Add books from a single directory, then find your ePub-formatted book on your computer. After your file uploads to Calibre, click on Convert books -> Convert individually, or do the same thing by right-clicking on the book you want to format. In the conversion section, go to Output format and select either MOBI or AZW3, which both work with the Kindle Fire HDX. MOBI is a bit more popular, so that's what I chose when converting. Click OK at the bottom and wait for the book to convert.
Step 3: Adding eBooks to the Kindle Fire HDXNow that your book is in a format that your Kindle Fire HDX can understand, it's time to transfer it to the tablet. Below, we'll go through the three different ways you can add an eBook to your Kindle Fire: via USB, through email, or with Dropbox.

Transferring eBooks via USBFor OS X users, you'll need to install the Android File Transfer (AFT) app on your computer in order to make a successful USB connection. Windows users, you have it easy; just connect via USB and use File Explorer to drag and drop.Connect your Kindle Fire HDX to your computer and, using AFT, go to the Books folder on the Fire HDX and drag the newly converted eBook (in MOBI format) from Calibre into it. With Windows, it's an easier processâ€”all you have to do is open the Books folder in the Kindle directory and place the MOBI eBook into it.

Transferring eBooks via EmailTo send the eBook via email, just right click on the book (or books) that you want to send, go to Connect/share -> Setup email based sharing of books. Enter your email address, and Calibre will shoot the eBook over. Alternatively, you can always save the eBook to your hard drive, and email it to yourself the traditional way.

Transferring eBooks via DropboxUsing Dropbox (or any other cloud service), you can upload the eBook (in MOBI format) on your computer, then access Dropbox through your Kindle's Silk web browser. Download the file and it will appear like in the screenshot below.

Step 4: Reading an Imported eBook on Your KindleNow that you're all set and your eBooks have been imported to your Kindle Fire, head over to the Books section. If your book does not appear for any reason, make sure that you uploaded it to the right folder and that you waited for the entire book to load onto your Kindle.
