How To: Get the Nextbit Robin's Launcher on Any Android
We recently covered a set of ported apps from the new cloud-based smartphone, the Nextbit Robin. These ported APKs brought two of the Robin's slick new stock apps—Camera and Gallery—to any other device, but the launcher was conspicuously absent.Don't Miss: Get the Nextbit Robin's Camera & Gallery Apps on Any Android DeviceBut developer Sergio Castell stepped in and ported the Robin's launcher to work on all Android devices, so now we have the full set. It's a distinctive and fast home screen app that sports a unique widget system, and it's super easy to install, so I'll show you how it works below.
RequirementsAndroid 5.0 or higher "Unknown sources" enabled

Step 1: Download & Install the APKTo start, grab the APK installer file, then tap the "Download complete" notification. From here, press "Install," then when that's finished, tap your device's home button. This will prompt you to select a new home screen app, so choose the Nextbit Launcher from the list, then press "Always."Download the Nextbit Robin Launcher (.apk) Note: Future versions and updates to this app can be found at the developer's thread on XDA.

Step 2: Try Out Your New LauncherOnce you've installed your new home screen, you'll quickly realize that it's quite a bit different than other launchers. For starters, there is no app drawer in the traditional sense, and instead, your apps are all visible on the home screen like they are on an iPhone. Folders have an interesting look, too, as their contents are overlaid on a blurred, semi-transparent white background. As you continue to poke around, you'll quickly notice a floating action button that resides on the right edge of every screen. This was initially designed for quick access to the Robin's cloud features (which don't work on other devices for obvious reasons), but at the very least, the "All apps" option it offers should serve as a nice app drawer alternative. Finally, one of the coolest aspects of this launcher is its quick access widget view. To try this out, pinch inward with two fingers on any home screen. When the screen turns frosty white, long-press any empty space, then select a widget from the list, and drop it on your home screen. If prompted, select "Always allow" and press "Create" to add the widget. From now on, you can view this widget page at any time by performing the same pinch-to-zoom gesture. Step 1: Install HermitTo get this one going, the first thing you'll need to do is install the app, which is called Hermit.Install Hermit for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Create Your Own Lite AppNext, simply open Hermit, then tap the floating action button in the bottom-right corner. From here, you've got two options—either enter a website's URL into the bar at the top of the screen, or select from one of the presets available underneath this menu. Regardless of which method you chose, the set-up process will be the same from this point onward. Once you arrive at the website's main page (or the page you want to see when you first open your lite app), use the text input field at the bottom of the screen to give your app a name. Once you've done that, tap "Create," then your new lite app will launch. If needed, you should log into the website at this point.

Step 3: Customize Your Lite AppFrom here, pull out the side navigation menu, then tap "Customize" to make a few tweaks to your new lite app. From here, the Behavior tab offers several interface options, including the ability to add "Pull to refresh" functionality, make the app full screen, and have external links open in your lite app. Beyond that, the "Block Ads" option is enabled by default, and there are a few other options that let you customize the content from website. Next, swipe over to the Themes tab, where you can set custom colors for the status bar and action bar at the top of the screen, or even choose a custom app icon. Then, the Integration tab lets you set up notifications and search functions, so your lite app can behave exactly as a regular app. But when you're done making changes here, be sure to tap the check mark in the top-right corner to save your work.

Step 4: Browse Your Favorite Sites Without Ads or Battery DrainFrom now on, you'll be able to use your lite app like any other. Hermit automatically adds an icon to your home screen for any app you create, so just tap this to get going. The interface for your new app even uses Material Design, though the rest of the app is basically just the mobile version of the website, so it's a native Android experience without all of the battery drain. While 2017 saw the rise of "bezel-less" smartphones, none truly lived up to the name. Samsung shrank its bezels significantly, while Apple went with the infamous "notch." However, Samsung seems on the verge of kicking bezels out the door with a new patent application that embeds the front camera into the display.The patent application, published Jan. 18, details not just the front camera, but also the sensors, receiver, and a home button or fingerprint sensor embedded into a smartphone display. Samsung lists this as a solution to create a larger display, which will lead to a more "natural" experience for the user.Don't Miss: Galaxy S9 Rumor Roundup — Everything We Know About Samsung's Upcoming Flagship The catch seems to be that the front camera, sensors, receiver, and home button or fingerprint sensor are all still visible. Based on the application, Samsung appears to have simply dug the aforementioned technology into the display as "holes." However, it's unclear whether those holes can have content displayed over them. In the application, Samsung refers to "masking," but the language is vague, and the diagrams show the embedded tech covers the content displayed on the device. Images by Samsung/USPTO Whatever the case may be, this patent application details that content can fill the entire display, even areas surrounding the technology embedded into it. To do this, Samsung breaks the display down into two areas — the "main area" and the "enlarged area."The main area resembles the 16 x 9 display form of a traditional smartphone. The enlarged area covers both the top and bottom "bezels," leaving only two tiny bezels at the top and bottom of the display. The rest of the front of the device is all screen.However, the top and bottom enlarged areas are subsequently broken up into smaller sections. From the drawings, it appears the top and bottom areas are divided into three sections each, however, Samsung describes 22 separate sections in the text of the patent. It isn't clear if those sections are simply not detailed in the drawings provided. The application does, however, list example pixel dimensions of the display:According to various exemplary embodiments, a size of the main area of the display can be, for example, 1440 x 2560 pixels. A size of the first enlarged area can be 1440 x 216 pixels. A size of the second enlarged area can be 1440 x 216 pixels. A size of the first area can be 1440 x 10 pixels. In addition, a size of the second area can be 1440 x 10 pixels.

First, you need to download an app called Copy (Text & Screenshots) by developer weberdo. Copy makes itself your default "Assist app," rather than Google Assistant. Either search for "Copy (Text & Screenshots)" in the Google Play Store, or tap the link below to go directly to it. Then, install it and open it up.Install Copy (Text & Screenshots) for free from the Google Play Store Once you open it up, Copy will ask that you make it the default assistance app. Do so by tapping the "Open Settings" button, and then tapping "Device assistance app" on the next screen. From the list, select "Copy," then you're all set. Copy replaces Google Assistant as the default app when you long-press your home button, but you can always use Assistant in the Google app if you need it. #1: Lock Screen GesturesThe M8 is a lot of things, but small just ain't one of 'em. Even compared to the Nexus 5, which also sports a 5-inch screen, this thing is huge. Tall would be a better way to describe it, as the suburb display is flanked by those wonderful BoomSound stereo speakers.Meanwhile, HTC continues to place the Power button at the very top of the device which makes reaching it awkward at best. Lucky for us, HTC lifted a page from LG's G2 playbook and included gestures you can use that will allow you to forget about the inconvenient Power button all together.Like the G2, double-tapping the screen will wake the device and bring you to the lock screen. Unlike the G2, however, you can't double-tap again to switch it back off. There's more. A swipe up on the display will take you directly to your home screen, a swipe to the right will launch into BlinkFeed, and a swipe down activates HTC's voice dial feature.These gestures only work if the display is off and you're holding the M8 in portrait orientation. Handy stuff, but if you're not feelin' it, switch them off by heading to Settings -> Display & gestures -> Motion Launch gestures and uncheck the Motion Launch gestures box.

#2: Camera App ShortcutHTC loves its Ultrapixel camera, and to that effect, they've provided us a shortcut to quickly launch into the camera app without ever having to worry about the Power button or waking the screen. Just flip the phone into landscape mode while the display is off and hold down the Volume Down key to launch the camera. It's a little more cumbersome than how the Moto X does it, but at least it works and they were thinking about it.

#3: ThemesWhat the Android faithful love most about their devices is the ability to tinker to their heart's content. Folks root and install custom ROMs just so they can change details as minute as status screen icons. Well, it appears HTC has been paying attention, because they've included some customization features and baked them right into the new Sense 6 UI. Head over to Settings -> Personalize -> Theme to choose from a handful of different color palettes for your device. These will change the accents, menus, BlinkFeed, and various native apps. Play around with and choose one that works best for you.

#4: Font StylesHTC has been kind enough to give us some control over the system font as well. You can swap out the default to Helvetica or LCD. Changing font styles will affect everything from menus to BlinkFeed to icon titles, and there's even an option to download more from Google Play. You can also change font size if you feel so inclined—check it all out for yourself under Settings -> Displays & gestures.

Quick Settings CustomizationOne of the most popular features in custom ROMs and why a lot of folks mod their phones is the ability to change their quick settings tiles, which are the grid of toggles you can access if you pull down the notification shade with two fingers or tap the icon in the top right after you pull it down.Your M8 gives you control over which toggles to display, and what order to display them in. Tap the icon with a pencil to be taken to a screen where you can drag and drop list items by long-pressing on the three-line icon the right. Move them around to reorder them or move them below the HIDDEN ITEMS bar to remove them from the quick settings menu. This is seriously useful stuff, and we should have been seeing it stock on every phone by every manufacturer since quick settings were first introduced, so props to HTC for giving us back another small piece of control.HTC once reigned as a superpower in the smartphone world before being outflanked by Apple and Samsung. Step 3: Use Android MessagesFor SMS, MMS, and RCS messages, the Pixel 2 uses Android Messages. Android Messages has a clean Material Design interface that makes texting easy to use. Fortunately, this app is available on the Play Store.Install Android Messages for free from the Google Play Store Once installed, follow the same steps as the Google Dialer to make it your default texting app. The only difference is that you select "Message app" instead of "Phone app." Once selected, choose "Messages" (the blue background icon) which will prompt a pop-up. Select "Set," then "Change" to enable messages. After you restart your phone, Android Messages will be the default messaging app. Setting Android Messages as the default SMS app [1], [2]; Android Messages [3].

Step 4: Change the Calendar AppLG decided to create their own calendar app by default. Since the Pixel 2 has an OLED screen, it can turn individual pixels completely off, allowing for true black backgrounds that waste no power. Manufacturers use this feature to turn off all but a few pixels to present at-a-glance information while minimizing battery use.The LG V30 has the same OLED display (LG is the manufacturer of Pixel 2 XL) and has the same feature built-in. However, it's disabled by default. So to activate Always-on Display, enter the main Settings menu and select the Display tab. Scroll down until you see the "Always-on display" option and select it to activate the feature.

There's a new macOS vulnerability that hackers within physical reach of your computer can use to gain root access to your system and accounts. Just by using "root" as the username and a blank password on a privilege escalation prompt, someone can install malware on your computer, access hidden files, reset your passwords, and more. Root access gives them the ability to do anything they want.Right now, this only appears to affect Mac users running macOS High Sierra 10.13.1.

How to See if Your System in VulnerableTo test if your system could be hacked, go to the "Users & Groups" section in "System Preferences," and click on the lock icon at the bottom of the pane to make changes. Remove your username and replace it with "root" instead. Next, click inside the password box, then hit the "Unlock" button.You may have to hit "Unlock" a few times to get it to unlock, but it will eventually work unless you manually set a root password on your Mac, which you likely didn't. This is just one example, but any security prompt asking for a username and password can be bypassed in this way, including on the login screen.

Once there, you would do the following.Type sudo passwd -u root and hit enter. Enter your current admin password and hit enter. Enter a new password for root and hit enter. Re-enter the root password to confirm and hit enter. After using the trick above, if you try to use the "root" and blank password to gain root access on a privilege escalation prompt, it won't work, and you'll need to enter your new root password in. After updating with Apple's patch, it won't work either, but you also won't have a root password. If you used the Terminal trick or created a root password manually, make sure to remember your new root password or keep it in a password manager you can access from other devices.
