Whatever the case, it's easy to switch from Google to another default search engine.Those of you who have a Microsoft PC might like to choose Bing as your default search engine in Chrome, and it's totally possible on both Android and iPhone. Aside from Bing, the other default options you can choose for the address bar (omnibox) search feature in Chrome include Google, Yahoo, and DuckDuckGo. Option 1: Change the Search Engine Using Google's PicksWhether you're on Android or iOS, the method here is identical. First, with Chrome open, tap on the horizontal or vertical ellipsis (•••). On iOS, it's in the bottom right, while on Android it could be in the bottom or top right, depending on your device.Next, hit "Settings," then "Search Engine." On the following screen, select between Google, Bing, Yahoo, or DuckDuckGo. This means you no longer need tools such as Geekbench and Battery Life to determine whether or not you need a replacement battery.The update was released to everyone as iOS 11.3 on Thursday, March 29, and you can get it by going to "General," then "Software Update" in your Settings app. Once you see the new update, follow the on-screen directions to download and install the update.Update: iOS 11.3.1 Released with Third-Party Display Repair Patch & Bug Fixes This new battery health tool is a great addition to iOS, but it comes a little too late and because of all of the wrong reasons. This performance throttling began in iOS 10.2.1 after iPhones began shutting down even when charged. Fingerprint Scanner & Ultimate Security:Most likely, you will never want your mom, wife, friends, or anyone else to use your phone. The Samsung Galaxy S6 has a scanner that can register four of your fingerprints. It works well if you switch your thumbs with forefingers of both hands.The finger scanner on S6 is slightly different from the one that was available on the S5. You need to put your finger on and off the home button (where the scanner lives), unlike with the S5, where you had to swipe your finger on the button. The latest Galaxy will not read the fingerprint until your finger is covering the button completely.In order to register your finger, access Settings and tap on the Security sub-menu; here you will see a section related to the fingerprint scanner. How To: Save Battery by Mirroring Your Android Screen to Chromecast with the Display Off
Screen mirroring was a long-awaited feature for the Chromecast, now available for select devices (and even more with root). While great news for those who couldn't wait to play games, watch movies, and browse pictures on a big screen, it did mean that you had to keep your device's screen on the entire time it was being mirrored.Obviously, this makes sense. It is mirroring, after all. But keeping the screen on means that overheating and battery drain become serious issues on your Android phone or tablet. And it goes further than just Chromecast mirroring, as those of us who have MHL cables or a Miracast-enabled device also share this burden.Developer nkaHnt heard our cries for help and developed Screen Standby, an app for both rooted and non-rooted Android phones that dims your screen when mirroring, effectively turning it off. While only intended to work for MHL cables and docks, I have found it to work perfectly while wirelessly mirroring to my Chromecast. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Note: This app can be a little buggy at times, so you may want to consider using it with either a Bluetooth mouse or PS3/PS4 controller tethered to your device. If you have problems with the screen coming back on, just restart to regain access to your phone.

Step 1: Install Screen StandbyScreen Standy is a free app, but it does come with a $2.00 in-app purchase that unlocks a few extra features like using another phone as a remote control. This app does work on non-rooted devices, but that mode only darkens your screen, so you won't be saving as much battery life as you would with a rooted device.

Step 2: Configure the App's SettingsAfter going through the setup wizard, you will be able to configure a few settings to get you going. If you are going the non-rooted route, you will need to enable that option from Screen off methods and set the effectiveness to 0% to save the most battery. If you are rooted, you will not have to set anything up. Just be sure to have an external input device connected to your Android, then tap Turn Off. You can also add a widget to your home screen if you don't want to open the app every time.

The Extra Features of Screen StandbyScreen Standby comes with some built-in features that can make turning your screen off and on easier, but they can be a tad buggy.You can use the proximity sensor to toggle your screen by waving your hand over it, or use your motion sensor to do the same thing by shaking it. Both options can be found under Temporarily Awake Methods in the settings page. Another experimental feature is the ability to turn your screen into a touchpad after it's turned off, but I was never able to get this to work properly, so hopefully nkaHnt updates the app to get this feature up and running.Lastly, you can have your screen turn off automatically once a certain app is opened by enabling the App Detection setting. This only works for rooted devices and can only be tied to four different apps.While Screen Standby has its share of little bugs, it still does what it has set out to do. You'll also see the cost of the call, which will be free unless you're dialing a contact outside of the U.S. or Canada. As soon as you click "Call", your laptop will begin dialing.

Keep in mind that every call you make via Google search will cause you to appear as "Unknown" on caller IDs. Since the days of flip clocks, alarms have always had one function—make a bunch of annoying racket early in the morning to ensure that you wake up in time. And this simple MO has stayed in place while technology advances at a breakneck pace, almost in spite of the fact that today's devices are capable of doing far more than beeping at 7 in the morning.Apple finally brought alarm clocks into this century starting in iOS 10, and the Clock app's new features work similarly in iOS 11 and iOS 12 on newer devices. Aside from the old-style alarms you're accustomed to, there's a feature called "Bedtime" (previously called "Wake Alarm") that's definitely worth setting up. It tells you when it's time to go to bed, tracks your sleep habits, and even lets you set a separate alarm volume. Plus, you can export some of the data to Apple Health.

Step 1: Create a New Bedtime AlarmTo try out the Bedtime feature, start by heading to the "Bedtime" tab in the Clock app. From here, tap "Get Started," then tell the app what time you'd like to wake up in the morning. Next, you'll be asked to select which days the alarm will go off, so take care of that, then tap "Next." At this point, the app will ask you how many hours you'd like to sleep each night. This is a pretty important aspect of Bedtime, so give it some thought, then pick a number. Next, you'll be asked when you'd like to be reminded that it's time to go to bed, and when you're done there, you can pick an alarm sound. Near the end of setup, you'll get a glimpse of the sleep-tracking feature, which uses the bedtime reminder and the next morning's alarm to measure how long you've slept. This will be visible by scrolling down on the Bedtime tab in the future, so go ahead and tap "Save" to finalize your work. In general, the Bedtime functions about how you would expect, with one notable exception: When bedtime comes around, you'll get a silent notification on your lock screen reminding you that it's almost time to hit the hay. Options on this notification will allow you to confirm that you're going to sleep or have it remind you again after a certain number of minutes.

Step 2: Adjust the Alarm After the Fact (Optional)In the future, if you decide that you'd like to adjust your Bedtime, start by heading to the Bedtime tab. From here, you can drag the moon icon around the circle to adjust the target sleep time, and you can do the same with the bell icon for your target wake time. But if you'd like to keep the same sleep interval and simply adjust the wake and sleep time instead, you can drag from any portion of the semi-circle to move the sleep and wake times simultaneously. Step 3: Change Alarm Volume Level Without Changing Ringer VolumeAnother awesome aspect to Bedtime is that you can finally set an alarm volume that is independent of any other system volume levels. To try this out, head to the Bedtime tab again, then tap the "Options" button at the top of the screen. From here, you'll see the alarm-specific volume slider at the bottom of the screen, which should be straightforward, but make sure to tap "Done" after making any changes.

Step 4: Sync Sleep Analysis Data with Apple HealthAs you can probably tell from some of the screenshots above, you can see "Sleep Analysis" data in the "Bedtime" tab in the Clock app. The data here shows you how long you slept, based on your bedtime and wake times set, but it knows when you're using your iPhone. So if you're using your iPhone after your bedtime, it won't count that as sleep time. If you snooze the alarm in the morning, it will count that as more bedtime in the details.By default, this sleep data is automatically synced with your Apple Health app. However, if for some reason it's not or you turned it off, you can enable it via the "Health" option in your device's "Privacy" settings. How To: 10 Third-Party Apps for Facebook Messenger You Should Install Right Now

Facebook essentially strong-armed us all into installing their standalone Messenger app for mobile devices, but the recent initiative that allows third-party development on the platform definitely makes it worth your time.We've been having a lot of fun with all the new Messenger apps, sending GIFs, videos, avatars, and more directly from message threads, so I wanted to show you our favorites out of the quickly expanding catalog of options—the ones you should install right now! Note: while we provide links to install these apps through both the Google Play Store and iOS App Store, you can easily access them through the three-dot menu that's visible while in a conversation thread. You can also use the apps from here, but more on that below.

Ditty: Say It with a SongBy singing the text you type to the tune of a chosen song, the app Ditty will make for some hilariously awesome conversations. Though the screenshots below do little justice to illustrate how fun this app is, I implore you to download it and give it a quick test drive. GIPHY: Express Feelings with a GIFWhen words fall short, express the way you feel with an animated GIF. Using the app GIPHY, it's easy to search for and find the perfect GIF for whatever you're trying to say. They're also pretty damn funny. Install GIPHY for Android Install GIPHY for iOS

ClipDis: Let Celebrities Say It for YouUsing ClipDis, simply write out any message to your friend, then let the app find clips in film and TV that say each of the words written in the message. FlipLip: Change Your VoiceIf you want to send a voice message through Messenger, then try FlipLip. Instead of a regular voice message, the app let's you change your voice with one of eight effects. Shout!: Say It LouderShout! is a fun application that lets you create personal GIFs. After every space in your sentence, the app takes a snapshot and places the typed word over your face. PingTank: Add 3D AnimationsIf you've ever felt like sending a picture with a huge, 3D robot animation obliterating an object, then PingTank is just the thing. Take a picture of anything or bring up one from your camera roll or gallery, then add one of the various 3D animations. Wordeo: Animate Your WordsWordeo is a cool way to attach imagery to your words. All you do is write out a sentence and the app finds pictures that correspond to the words in the sentence. Once you've chosen an image for each word, the app brings them all together with a short video. You even have the option to include music in your video. Bitmoji: Illustrate YourselfBitmoji is one of the simpler apps, but it's still pretty fun. After creating your personal avatar, the app allows you to send some regularly-used phrases or sayings in an animated way with your avatar acting out the phrase. I have to admit, it's kind of cute, dare I say. Install Bitmoji for Android Install Bitmoji for iOS

Effectify: Give Yourself a Makeover... Kind OfEffectify is a personal favorite, and it's pretty damn simple. Just take a picture of a face, then add any of the available effects. You can make yourself old, double-chinned, a werewolf, and much more. What I like is that the effects look fairly close to real, especially if you add a filter afterwards. Install Effectify for iOS None yet for Android, but keep an eye out for it

MEMES: Because They're CoolWhat makes the MEMES app useful is that you don't have to go looking for useful memes, because the app lets you create personal ones on the spot. Scroll through the archive of countless popular memes, then add your own text to the image. Install MEMES for Android No iOS version yet

More Sharing OptionsWhile you can always open these apps to send them through Messenger, there's an easier way to do so. When in a Messenger conversation, select the three-dot icon and you'll see a list of installed "for Messenger" apps, as well as the ones you haven't installed. You can also save your content and share it in other ways, like through email or text, just by tapping and holding on the content in your Messenger conversation and selecting "Save." In all honesty, I was never really into Facebook Messenger (especially after being forced to install it just to correspond with FB friends on my phone), but these third-party apps have definitely swayed me into utilizing the service more frequently.What are your favorite apps for Messenger?
